Ankit Mehrotra is an Indian entrepreneur best known as the co-founder and former chief executive officer of Dineout, a dining-out platform later acquired by Swiggy. He is also the co-founder of The Medical Travel Company, which focuses on organising end-to-end cross-border medical travel to India.[1][2][3]
Early life and education
[edit]Mehrotra completed his schooling at Modern School, New Delhi, where he studied from 1989 to 2002. He later moved to the United Kingdom for higher education.[4]
From 2002 to 2005, he attended the University of Essex, earning a BEng in Computers and Telecommunications Engineering.[4]
While working in London, he pursued professional finance training and obtained the CFA charter in 2011.[4]
Career
[edit]Mehrotra began his career in London, working in investment banking and wealth management at BNP Paribas.[5]
In 2012, he co-founded Dineout with Sahil Jain, Nikhil Bakshi, and Vivek Kapoor. The company initially operated as an online table-reservation service for restaurants in Delhi-NCR and Mumbai.[6]
Dineout was acquired by Times Internet's TimesCity unit in a milestone-based transaction, after which Mehrotra and the founding team continued to run the business. In 2022, Swiggy agreed to acquire Dineout from Times Internet, with Mehrotra joining Swiggy as part of the deal while the platform continued operating as an independent brand.[7]
In 2024, Mehrotra co-founded The Medical Travel Company (TMTC), a platform focused on organising and managing cross-border medical travel through partnerships with hospitals, government bodies, and wellness institutions.[8]
Awards and recognition
[edit]In 2016, Mehrotra received the Entrepreneur of the Year honour at the Study UK Alumni Awards|Education UK Alumni Awards.[9][10]
In 2018, Dineout, under his leadership, was recognised with the TechRocketship Award and the India Emerging 20 Award, jointly supported by the governments of the United Kingdom and India.[8]
He was named Digital Entrepreneur of the Year at the Drivers of Digital Awards in 2019 and was included in the Top 50 Most Influential eCommerce Professionals list by the eCommerce Summit & Awards the same year.[8][11]
In 2023, the University of Essex presented him with a Vice-Chancellor's Award.[10][8]
