Butter Swamp

[edit]

Butter Swamp are an American rock band formed in Boise, Idaho, in 2022. They comprise Silas Grayson (vocals, guitar, keyboards); Bill Madden (bass, drums, vocals) and Svāntes Miķēlsons (guitar, vocals). Their sound aesthetic oscilates between sub-genres like Hypnagogic Pop, Egg Punk, Surf Rock, Folk, New Wave and many more and have self-released many albums and EPs under the home made unofficial label Spoki Records. They aren't currently close to each other for Silas is living in Colombia and Svāntes in Canada, both attending High School. Bill is the one living in Appalachia, whose location was chosen for the general exhibition of the band given its central location between the two countries and personal preferences.

They currently have an active presence on the internet, mostly on Bandcamp and Youtube, where they have got all of their music uploaded from start to present, which has lead to a small recognition in the current internet Garage Rock scene.

They became better known for releases such as All My Friends Have a Band, The Great Patriarch and Don't Play This One At The Hallowfest! (Halloween Record ´24). They also have a huge fanaticism and affection for the Michelin man, often including him on album covers, drawings and even songs, which has become a notable sign and unofficial logo and mascot for them. The constant use of this character has become part of the band's aesthetic and has been recognized and referenced on several occasions by their fanbase. However, the use of this character is not official and does not try to be and Butter Swamp recognizes that the Michelin man mascot obviously belongs to Michelin, the famous French tyre manufacturing enterprise.

Beginnings and influences

Boise meetup and Electric Ketchup (early music)

[edit]

The three members of the band first met in 2021, Silas Grayson had traveled from Colombia to do an internship at a high school in Boise, Idaho. He stayed at Svāntes' house for a period of time of three weeks. Svāntes was the son of two of Silas' parents' best friends, who proposed Silas and his parents to send him and his brother to the United States and test the waters before possibly studying there. Meanwhile, the two became friends and often shared afternoons of little jam sessions. They later met Bill Madden in high school, who shared musical and aesthetic interests with the other two boys. Bill was a friend of the high school's jazz band's skilled drummer Nigel O'Neil, who was popular among the people at the school for his drumming and style, for he liked bands like Weezer and The Smiths and quite resembled Michael Cera on the movie Superbad. The four boys became huge friends and soon thought of forming a shoegaze band they decided to call Electric Ketchup, inspired from witnessing an incident in which Svāntes' father had a cramp while holding a bottle of Heinz Tomato Ketchup.

With Electric Ketchup, the four guys would learn cassette recording on an old Tascam 424 multitrack machine Nigel's dad owned, which would be a point of no return for the growing interest of the boys in tape recording, which they considered the best way to achieve a lo-fi sound inspired by artists like Ariel Pink, one of Bill's favorites, or the legendary R. Stevie Moore, whose music caught the attention of Silas after hearing it at the winter ball at Nigel's request.

They played live two times at the winter dance (which the students called the "Electric Boogaloo Fest" made it look like a rock festival) along with some other bands from the same high school in 2021 and 2022 and made a small gig in Svāntes garage in the spring of 2023.

The band particularly remembers one incident at the winter dance of 2022 when they decided to close playing a cover of the song Goo Goo Muck by The Cramps just because it seemed "a bit popular among the students" at the time. What they didn't know was that it was because of its recent appearance in the Wednesday TV series which came with the famous dance to it popularized on a TikTok trend. The band witnessed with horror how almost every student on the court danced like Wednesday as they played the song. Silas claims to have felt a terrifying sensation in his testicles.
