Craft is a cross-platform productivity and note-taking application developed by Craft Docs Ltd., a software company based in Budapest, Hungary. The application allows users to create, organize, and share documents across Apple devices, Windows, Android, and web browsers. Craft was named App Store Mac App of the Year in 2021.[1]

Founding

Craft was founded in 2019 by Bálint Orosz in Budapest, Hungary. Orosz previously served as Head of Product for Mobile at Skyscanner after his startup Distinction was acquired by Skyscanner in 2014.[2] In 2023, Forbes Hungary named Craft among the country's "hottest startups."[3]

Launch and growth

The application launched publicly on November 12, 2020 for macOS and iOS.[2] Craft focused on native platform integration and offline functionality, differentiating it from web-first competitors like Notion.[4]

In April 2021, Craft raised $8 million in Series A funding led by Creandum, with participation from InReach Ventures and Gareth Williams, co-founder of Skyscanner. TechCrunch referred to the investor group as the "Skyscanner Mafia" due to the involvement of multiple former Skyscanner executives.[2]

In December 2021, Apple named Craft the Mac App of the Year at the App Store Awards.[1]

In 2022, Craft expanded to additional platforms, releasing a web version in August and a Windows application in September.[5] The company raised $12.2 million in Series B funding in September 2022 led by EBRD Venture Capital, bringing total funding to approximately $20 million. At the time, the company reported over one million installs.[5] Forbes Hungary covered the funding round, describing Craft as a "top Hungarian startup."[6]

In November 2024, Craft released version 3, which introduced new document styling options, a Collections feature, and enhanced task management tools including a unified calendar view.[7]

In September 2025, Craft introduced a design update and integrated Apple Foundation Models for on-device AI.[8]

Awards

Craft has received industry awards for design. In addition to the 2021 Mac App of the Year award,[1] Craft was named an Apple Design Awards finalist in 2021.[9] The application received a German Design Award for Interactive User Experience[10] and a German Brand Award.[11] Craft won two Webby Awards in 2024 (Best User Experience and People's Voice for Work, Productivity & Collaboration)[12] and two Webby Awards in 2025 (Best User Interface and Productivity).[13]

Features

Craft uses a block-based editing system that allows users to create documents using modular blocks for rich text, images, code blocks, and other content.[4] The application supports nested pages, folders, and linking between documents.[14] Fast Company described Craft as "a great all-in-one productivity tool," noting its visual design, collaboration features, and AI capabilities.[15]

The application provides import and export capabilities for formats including Markdown, PDF, Microsoft Word, and TextBundle.[4] Craft supports real-time collaboration, allowing multiple users to edit documents simultaneously.[14]

Version 3 added task management features that enable users to create tasks within documents with checklists, due dates, and reminders. Tasks integrate with a calendar view.[7] Pocket-lint noted that Craft appeals to "visual thinkers and designers" compared to competitors like Notion.[16]

Craft includes an AI assistant feature powered by large language models, offering content generation, proofreading, translation, and summarization.[14] The application offers both cloud-based AI processing and on-device options using models such as Apple Foundation Models.[8]

Craft is available as native applications for macOS, iOS, iPadOS, Microsoft Windows, and Android (beta), as well as through a web version.[17]

Cross-platform synchronization uses cloud-based accounts for real-time updates across devices.[4] All platforms support offline functionality, with changes syncing when connectivity is restored.[4]
