Comment: There is evidence of AI usage here. wiki.uni-freiburg.de is NOT a reliable source and assorted passing mentions are not what is required, we need significant in-depth coverage in reliable independent sources. Theroadislong (talk) 19:25, 12 December 2025 (UTC)

Emrex is a digital system for the cross-border transfer of academic credits between universities. It continued to be operated by several European countries after EU funding ended and is used particularly in the Nordic higher education area. Emrex enables students to transfer academic records electronically from one university to another without having to submit physical documents.
Background
[edit]Emrex was created in the mid-2010s against the backdrop of increasing European higher education mobility. The Finnish National Agency for Education describes the electronically transferable achievement data as a contribution to simplifying mobility between higher education institutions in the Nordic and Baltic countries.[1]
How it works
[edit]The system is based on the idea that students initiate the exchange of their data themselves. Universities that support Emrex use a standardized data format and a secure technical interface for this purpose. The European Commission describes Emrex as an infrastructure that enables the fast and verified exchange of academic results and is used productively in several countries.[2]
Use in universities
[edit]In Finland, Emrex is integrated into the national higher education information system. According to Aalto University, students there can request course and exam results electronically and transfer them between universities, replacing the paper-based procedures that were previously the norm.[3]
Classification in the European context
[edit]A report on interoperability in higher education classifies Emrex as one of several digital solutions that support data exchange between European universities. The system is cited there as an example of standardized transmission of academic records, which exists in parallel with other initiatives such as Erasmus Without Paper and Europass.[4]
Reception
[edit]In an article in the French digital culture magazine La collection numérique, Emrex is described as part of a larger European infrastructure for digital mobility. The article emphasizes that the solution is based on student control over the transfer of personal data and can also be used beyond higher education.[5]
