Eran Viezel (Hebrew: ערן ויזל; born June 18, 1972) is a full professor at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev, a biblical scholar, and an Israeli author and poet.

Biography

Eran Viezel was born in Kibbutz Netiv HaLamed-Heh to Rachel and Meir Viezel. He completed a BA in Bible and General and Comparative Literature in 2000; an MA in Bible in 2003; and a PhD under the supervision of Sara Japhet in 2009. His doctoral dissertation is titled "Commentary on Chronicles attributed to Rashi: its sources and methodology, its contribution to the exegesis of Chronicles and its role in the history of Jewish Biblical exegesis"

In 2013, Viezel joined the Department of Bible Studies, Archeology and the Ancient Near East at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev. He was promoted to full professor in 2022. He has taught at universities in Europe, the United States, and China.

Viezel is married to Ella (née Stern), and they have four children. He resides at Kibbutz Netiv HaLamed-Heh.

Research

In his research, Viezel engages with biblical interpretation throughout its history, with an emphasis on rabbinic exegesis, from the exegesis of the Sages (Chazal), through medieval biblical commentary, to biblical scholarship in the period of the Haskalah and in modern times. His research is notable for its broad historical and cultural perspective, and he frequently engages with methodological issues and the history of scholarship. Among his endeavors is the question of the composition of biblical books in Jewish tradition throughout the ages.

In addition to his scholarly work, Viezel is a poet and author.
