Hygraph is a German headless content management system founded in 2017 in Giesen, Germany, by Michael Lukaszczyk and Daniel Winter. The company and the platform are both called Hygraph.
As of July 2022, the company is headquartered in Berlin, Germany with a globally distributed team operating remotely across 5 continents and 18 countries. Approximately 30% of the workforce is based in the Berlin office while the rest works remotely.
History
[edit]Hygraph was founded in 2017 when the founders, both developers with experience in digital asset management, identified the limitations of the traditional CMS platforms as well as the potential of GraphQL. To address these challenges they developed a CMS that leverages GraphQL.
In 2021 the company raised a Series A round of funding of $10 million[1] led by OpenOcean, with participation from Peak and Paua ventures. Strategic investors included Robin Vasan (Mango Capital), Evan Weaver (Fauna) and Mirko Novakovic (Instana).
In 2022 the company rebranded from GraphCMS to Hygraph[2] to reflect its evolution beyond a headless CMS. The rebranding coincided with the introduction of “Content Federation”[3], a feature allowing organizations to unify backend services into a single content API. This enabled the integration of third-party or programmatically created content alongside editorial content.
In 2023 the company raised a Series B round of funding of $30 million led by One Peak[4], with existing investors OpenOcean, Peak and SquareOne and a new angel investor Boris Lokschin (Co-Founder and CEO of Spryker Systems) participating. The funding aimed to accelerate platform development and expand go-to-market strategies, particularly in North America.
Clients
[edit]As of 2025, Hygraph serves over 400 organizations globally including prominent brands such as Samsung, Dr. Oetker, Epic Games, Shure and Vertu Motors.
