Jesse David Peterson (born October 28, 1980) is a Canadian writer and satirist based in Vietnam. He is best known for his humorous and culturally observant essays published in Vietnamese media outlets, as well as his contributions to contemporary satire in Vietnam. He is a regular columnist for Tuổi Trẻ Cười.[1]
Early life and education
[edit]Peterson was born in Canada on October 28, 1980. He served in the Canadian Armed Forces, including deployment in Afghanistan, before relocating to Vietnam in the early 2010s.
Career
[edit]Peterson has written extensively in both English and Vietnamese, with a focus on humor, culture, and cross-cultural experiences. He is a regular columnist for Tuổi Trẻ Cười, Vietnam’s longest-running satire magazine, where he publishes essays under the pen name "Jesse Cười".[2] His writing blends autobiographical storytelling with cultural observation and local satire.
He is also a frequent contributor to VnExpress through its opinion column Góc Nhìn, where he publishes essays in both English and Vietnamese.[3] His work for VnExpress has included personal reflections, cultural criticism, and humorous essays that often go viral among Vietnamese and expat readers alike.
Peterson’s bilingual writing style has drawn media attention for its originality and wit. In 2024, Vietnam News profiled him as a unique voice in the local publishing scene, noting his ability to “write for Vietnamese readers, in Vietnamese, from the inside.”[4]
In November 2023, Peterson launched his third Vietnamese-language book, Bi hài kịch – Sắc màu làm nên cuộc sống, in Ho Chi Minh City. The book and its reception were covered by multiple Vietnamese media outlets.[5][6]
Beyond journalism and publishing, Peterson is active in Vietnam’s arts and education scene. He has worked in stand-up comedy, documentary filmmaking, and English-language teaching.[7] He also develops tabletop role-playing game (TTRPG) campaigns set in historical Vietnam, which serve as creative platforms for storytelling and fiction writing.
Book launches
[edit]Peterson has published three books in Vietnamese:
- Jesse Cười và Cuộc Phiêu Lưu Hài Hước (2018)
- Ở đây vui quá, xin lỗi, cười hết nổi! (2019)
- Bi hài kịch – Sắc màu làm nên cuộc sống (2023)[8]
His third book, Bi hài kịch – Sắc màu làm nên cuộc sống, was launched in Ho Chi Minh City in November 2023. It received media attention for its bilingual humor and sharp reflections on Vietnamese daily life.[9] The launch was also featured by Vietnam.vn, which highlighted Peterson’s growing popularity as a foreign author writing in Vietnamese.[10]
Published works

- Jesse Cười và Cuộc Phiêu Lưu Hài Hước (2018)
- Ở đây vui quá, xin lỗi, cười hết nổi! (2019)
- Bi hài kịch – Sắc màu làm nên cuộc sống (2023)[11]
He is also working on his first English-language book, titled Living in Saigon, a collection of humorous essays about life in Vietnam.[12]
Style and themes
[edit]Peterson’s writing blends observational humor with cross-cultural commentary, often drawing on daily life in Vietnam and his own experiences as a foreigner navigating local customs.[13] His essays frequently explore themes of identity, misunderstanding, and the absurdity of everyday situations—particularly those arising from language, bureaucracy, or generational differences.
He is known for integrating bilingual wordplay and subtle satire, appealing to both Vietnamese and foreign readers. In a profile by Vietnam News, Peterson was praised for his “whimsical yet reflective” voice and his ability to write from an insider-outsider perspective in Vietnamese.[14]
Cognitive bias, logical fallacies, and psychological insights are also recurring elements in his writing and comedy, reflecting his interest in critical thinking and social behavior.[15]
Other activities
[edit]In addition to his writing career, Peterson has been active in several creative and educational fields in Vietnam. He has performed stand-up comedy at local venues, using humor to explore cultural differences and everyday absurdities.[16]
He has also worked on documentary filmmaking projects and taught English to students and professionals in Ho Chi Minh City.[17] These experiences have informed his writing style, particularly his focus on communication, misunderstanding, and education.
Peterson is an active member of Vietnam’s tabletop role-playing game (TTRPG) community. He designs and runs historical-horror adventures inspired by Vietnamese folklore and colonial-era settings. His campaigns often blend psychological horror, cultural history, and cosmic satire, contributing to a small but growing TTRPG scene in the country.[18]
