MaxBP

[edit]

MaxBP is an American brand that produces baseball and softball training equipment, founded by Neil McConnell and Brian Greene in 2010. The company was established to create tools that improve hand-eye coordination, reaction time, pitch recognition, and vision training for athletes.[1]. Since its establishment, MaxBP has sold over 25,000 pitching machines worldwide to pro, college, travel, and youth teams[2].

Company History

[edit]

MaxBP was founded in 2010 by Neil McConnell and Brian Greene, initially operating in San Diego before relocating to Portland, Oregon. The company was born out of McConnell’s lifelong passion for hitting and Greene’s complementary business expertise[3]. MaxBP quickly gained recognition for its core product: a portable small ball pitching machine designed to improve athletes' hand-eye coordination, pitch recognition, vision training, and reaction time[4]. Originally developed for baseball and softball training, the equipment has since been adapted for use in other sports like hockey, pickleball, and lacrosse[5].

The company has expanded globally, selling more than 25,000 machines in over 25 countries, including the United States, Japan, Germany, and India. Its user base includes MLB players such as Luis Arraez, Pete Alonso, Julio Rodriguez, Hunter Pence, and Jose Reyes, as well as collegiate programs like UCLA, LSU, and the University of Virginia[6]. MaxBP has also become a prominent tool for vision training, working closely with experts like Dr. Bill Harrison and Ryan Harrison, who have developed widely used sports vision platforms and training apps[7]. As of 2025, MaxBP continues to serve athletes of all levels with advanced training tools[8].

Machine Designs

[edit]

MaxBP offers two advanced models designed to improve pitch recognition, eye-hand coordination and reaction time[9]. The MaxBP Original Pitching Machine is ideal for youth athletes up to high school athletes. It features five pitch speed settings, soft toss, low, medium, high, and turbo, and also offers right handed and left handed curveball features [10].

Other key features include a load indicator light, five feeder interval options (3, 4, 5, 6, and 8 seconds)[11]. Each purchase includes an AC power adapter and 96 training balls, with an external 8 hour battery available as an add on. All MaxBP Machines come with a chart that shows you the velocity that you are simulating based off of what setting the machine is on, and how far away the machine is from the batter.

The MaxBP Pro is their advanced model which is ideal for experienced teams and hitters looking for more advanced training[12]. The MaxBP Pro Pitching Machine features six exit velocities to simulate a variety of pitch types. It includes a load indicator light and five feeder intervals (3, 4, 5, 6, and 8 seconds) for customizable timing. The Pro model is also equipped with a three-ball feeder that allows for a rapid-fire setting, pitching one ball every second[13]. Additionally, the MaxBP Pro offers three right-handed and three left-handed breaking balls—curveball, slider, and cutter. With purchase, it also includes an AC power outlet, 96 training balls, and a convenient carrying handle. For an additional price, customers can upgrade their machine to an internal 8 hour battery.

MaxBP machines are also available in bundle deals that include essential accessories such as a machine bag, portable battery pack, tripod, home plate, and two bags of training balls, providing a complete training setup.

While their machines are primarily used as a hitting tool to improve contact rate and hand-eye coordination, they can also be adapted for defensive drills, catching drills and a variety of other vision training drills (see website for details).

MaxBP also offers a range of training products on their website, including the BetterBat, a skinny barrel training bat designed to improve hand-eye coordination and contact accuracy. The BetterBat breaks down into smaller pieces for easy portability and customization. Additional products include weighted bats, heavy balls, baseball training gloves, and tripods. For a full list of available products, visit their website[14].
