Mir Hwang is an American tech entrepreneur and former professional session musician. He is the co-founder and CEO of GigFinesse, a music technology company that connects live music venues with artists.[1][2]
Early life and education
[edit]Hwang was born in South Korea and raised in Vancouver, Canada. He began playing drums in middle school and was performing professionally with local bands by high school.[2] His early experiences as a working musician, including routing tours and cold-emailing unresponsive venues, exposed him to inefficiencies in the live booking industry that he would later seek to address.[3]
Hwang attended New York University, initially on a pre-medical track studying psychology with a chemistry minor. He continued working as a session drummer throughout college.[2][4] During his senior year, he decided to leave medicine and co-founded GigFinesse in 2019 with his cousin Ryan Kim, who left a position at Google to join the venture.[3]
Career
[edit]While at NYU, Hwang developed the idea for GigFinesse from booking issues he faced as a musician. He participated in the university's startup accelerator programs, including Startup Bootcamp, Startup Sprint, and Summer Launchpad. GigFinesse won the top prize at the InnoVention competition and participated in the New Venture track of the Entrepreneurs Challenge, experiences that provided early resources to launch the company.[3]
GigFinesse officially launched just before the COVID-19 pandemic hit, shutting down the live music industry overnight. Hwang temporarily relocated to company's operations to Austin, Texas, where clubs and venues remained open. Since then, Hwang has led GigFinesse as CEO. Under his leadership, the company has raised nearly $10 million in total funding, grown to nearly 30 employees, and facilitated over 50,000 live shows nationwide for independent artists.[5][6]
Hwang now mentors student founders as a Founder in Residence at NYU's Leslie eLab.[3]
