Mizanur Rahman Azhari (born 26 January 1990) is a Bangladeshi Islamic scholar, preacher, and author.[4][5] He has gained popularity in Bangladesh through Waz Mahfils. He is also the founder of the Hasanah Foundation.[6][7][8] He claims to be a moderate Islamic speaker and holds discussions.[9][10][11][12][13]
Early life
[edit]Mizanur Rahman's father is a madrasah teacher and his mother is a homemaker.[14] He was born on 26 January 1990 in Demra Thana, Dhaka District. His ancestral home is in the village of Paramtala in Muradnagar, Cumilla District.[10] He studied in a madrasah from a young age. Later, he received a scholarship to Al-Azhar University. The title 'Azhari' was added to his name due to his studies at Al-Azhar University in Egypt.[10]
Mizanur Rahman married on 29 January 2014. He has two daughters.[10]
Education
[edit]Azhari passed his Dakhil examination in 2004 and Alim examination in 2006 from Darunnajat Siddikia Kamil Madrasah. He achieved the top position in the merit list of the Bangladesh Madrasah Education Board in both examinations. In 2007, he secured the first position in the scholarship examination organized by the Islamic Foundation Bangladesh for the Egyptian government. Subsequently, he studied at Al-Azhar University in Egypt in the Department of Tafsir and Quranic Sciences. After graduating, he obtained his M.Phil and PhD degrees from the International Islamic University Malaysia. The topic of his M.Phil research was 'Human Embryology in The Holy Quran'. He was then selected as a PhD candidate at the same university.[10][15][16] He completed his PhD research on 'Human Behavioural Characteristics in The Holy Quran and an Analytical Study' through a viva voce in late December 2021.[17][18][19][20]
Career
[edit]Azhari began his career in 2010 with Islamic ghazals and qirat. He later joined an Islamic program on ATN Bangla TV. In early 2015, he started his career with Waz-Mahfils.[21][22][23][24] He hosted a program on Boishakhi Television titled 'Islam O Shundor Jibon' (Islam and Beautiful Life).[10]
Popularity
[edit]By presenting himself in a contemporary manner while adhering to the principles of Islam, and through his simple, fluent, and research-based discussions on the Quran and Hadith, he has gained popularity among the Muslims of Bangladesh, especially the youth, in a short time. At his mahfils, people from different religions often convert to Islam through him.[25] His tafsir mahfils see large gatherings of ordinary Muslims and young people.[7][26][27][28]
Books
[edit]Azhari has published five books to date.
- Message: Adhunik Monone Deen er Choya (Message: A Touch of Faith in the Modern Mind) - published at the Ekushey Book Fair in 2021[29]
Ahban: Adhunik Monone Alor Porosh (The Call: A Touch of Light on the Modern Mind) - published in 2022
Reflection from Surah Yusuf
- Jege Otho Abar (Wake Up Again)[30]
- Ek Nojore Quran (Quran at a Glance) - published at the Ekushey Book Fair in 2025[31]
Criticism
[edit]In January 2020, he was criticized in the media when 12 Indian Hindus entered Bangladesh on illegal visas and converted to Islam at his hands.[32] His mahfils have been banned one or more times in various places due to allegations of anti-state speech.[33][34] In January 2020, a member of the Jatiya Sangsad (Bangladesh's Parliament) claimed that he made anti-state comments.[6][35] At the same time, after he commented, "May a Sayedee be born in every house," the former State Minister for Religious Affairs of Bangladesh, Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah, called him a "product of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami" and stated that action would be taken against him.[8][9]
In October 2021, although he was scheduled to attend an Islamic conference in London at the invitation of iON TV, the UK Home Office denied him entry on allegations of offending other religions and spreading hate speech.[36] Later, although a case was filed against the entry ban, the court ruled in favor of his visa cancellation.[37]
On December 6, 2023, a tweet from Azhari's Twitter account regarding Palestine-Israel created controversy. Subsequently, on December 8, he explained the tweet, saying, "I have never personally used Twitter. I only manage my verified Facebook page. A few days ago, another person was given the responsibility of verifying my Twitter account, and that person made these tweets. Claiming the controversial tweet was misleading, I asked for it to be deleted as soon as I saw it."[38][39] On January 3, 2025, at a Tafsirul Quran Mahfil in Jashore, he sparked widespread discussion with his comment, "One party has devoured, another is ready to devour."[40]
Departure and Return
[edit]On January 29, 2020, Azhari announced in a post on his Facebook page that he was going to Malaysia, suspending all his Waz Mahfils until March "due to circumstantial reasons and for research." He mentioned, "I am going back to Malaysia for research work." Since then, he has not participated in any more Waz Mahfils.[41]
After the fall of the Awami League government on August 5, 2024, Azhari returned to the country on October 2.[42]
Honors
