Onchain Organization refers to a group of individuals—often strangers—who coordinate online and pool resources using blockchain-based infrastructure to pursue a shared objective. Unlike traditional organizations, onchain organizations operate natively on the internet and leverage smart contracts or digital assets to align incentives and manage participation. They are a broader category than Decentralized Autonomous Organizations (DAOs) and may not be fully decentralized or autonomous.
Notable examples include ConstitutionDAO, which formed in November 2021 to attempt the purchase of an original copy of the United States Constitution, and PleasrDAO, which famously acquired the one-of-a-kind Wu-Tang Clan album Once Upon a Time in Shaolin for $4 million. These instances highlight how onchain coordination enables rapid, collective action toward goals that would traditionally require trusted intermediaries.
