SSMB29 is an upcoming Indian Telugu-language action-adventure film directed by S. S. Rajamouli and written by his father, V. Vijayendra Prasad. The film stars Mahesh Babu in the lead role, alongside Prithviraj Sukumaran as the antagonist and Priyanka Chopra in a prominent role. It is produced by K. L. Narayana under the Sri Durga Arts banner.[1]
Billed as a globe-trotting jungle adventure, the film is reportedly set against the historical and mythological backdrop of Kashi (modern-day Varanasi), blending Indian cultural elements with international-scale action and fantasy.[2]

The protagonist embarks on a quest connected to the city of Kashi and Lord Shiva, with thematic parallels to the Ramayana, specifically Hanuman’s search for the Sanjeevani herb. The film is described as a blend of mythological depth and high-octane adventure, inspired by franchises like James Bond and Indiana Jones.[2]

Production
[edit]The film was officially launched on January 2, 2025, with a pooja ceremony in Hyderabad.[3] Filming began in Odisha, India, specifically at the Talamali Hilltop in the Semiliguda block of Koraput district.[4] A combination of real jungle terrains and elaborate sets replicating Kashi is being used, with additional locations in Africa reportedly being scouted.[5]
The project’s production scale is reportedly among the largest ever in Indian cinema, with high expectations for VFX and elaborate set design.[6] Massive sets have been constructed in Hyderabad to recreate mythological elements of Kashi.[3] A hybrid shooting method is being used, combining real locations with studio-built environments.[7]
Leaks and Controversy
[edit]In March 2025, leaked video clips from the Odisha schedule went viral on social media, revealing a rugged look of Mahesh Babu and confirming Prithviraj Sukumaran's role as the villain.[7][4] One scene depicts the lead character being held at gunpoint. In response, the production team heightened security, including a three-layer security setup and legal warnings against unauthorized footage circulation.[8][9]
Development
[edit]Director Rajamouli expressed interest in creating a pan-India film rooted in Indian tradition but told through an international lens. He described the film as a “James Bond or Indiana Jones” adventure with Indian roots during a media interaction at the 2022 Toronto International Film Festival.[2] Mahesh Babu has called the role physically demanding and said working with Rajamouli is “a dream come true.”[1]
Release
[edit]The film is scheduled for a Summer 2027 release and is expected to be dubbed in multiple Indian and international languages.[10] It will be released theatrically worldwide.
