By default this template's lists are collapsed to minimise the displacement of other elements on the page, such as other templates or images. However, editors may override this on an article to automatically expand a list and reveal its contents. This can be achieved by setting the following parameters:
|expand= followed by either Place-value notation or Sign-value notation to automatically expand one of those lists.
|expand2= followed by either Hindu-Arabic numeral system, Other systems, or By radix/base to automatically expand of one of those lists.
|expand3= followed by either Non-alphabetic or Alphabetic to automatically expand one of those lists.
The parameters |expand2= or |expand3= will only automatically expand the named list, not its parent list, so |expand= must also be set when those parameters are used if the intention is to make the named list immediately visible to readers.
Examples
Placing {{Numeral systems|expand=Place-value notation}} will insert this template with only the "Place-value notation" list automatically expanded. All further lists within it will remain collapsed.
Placing {{Numeral systems|expand=Place-value notation|expand2=By radix/base}} will insert this template with both the "By radix/base" list and its parent, "Place-value notation", automatically expanded.
Placing {{Numeral systems|expand=Sign-value notation|expand3=Non-alphabetic}} will insert this template with both the "Non-alphabetic" list and its parent, "Sign-value notation", automatically expanded.
