I have been using this template on mountain range pages but often the side box ends up below the mountain infobox on the right side and not directly in the relevant section. Could this template add support for the "/position=left" parameter from {{Side box}} so I could have the box displayed directly below the table of mountains? KML link broken
[edit]I'm getting a "403 Forbidden" error at, for example, https://kmlexport.toolforge.org/?article=Grange_Court

- Hey Andy, I also faced this issue. And I realized it is because I was trying to open the link in a new browser tab. Could you please try to open link in the current tab? I added section Template:GeoGroup#Troubleshoot in the documentation and also request to add a troubleshoot link in the template. Xiliuheshui · chat 06:56, 13 July 2025 (UTC)
- If I click on the link in Grange Court it opens in a new tab by default.
- I also get the error if I click on the direct link in my original post above, which also opens in a new tab by default. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 12:59, 13 July 2025 (UTC)
- There is a gadget
Open external links in a new tab or window(Preferences->Gadgets), maybe you turned it on. Please turn off and try again. Xiliuheshui · chat 18:51, 13 July 2025 (UTC)
- There is a gadget
- Opening in a new tab or window is a perfectly reasonable thing to do. Why does it cause an error? Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 16:59, 25 September 2025 (UTC)

- This seems excessive. We don't need to plaster more meta-information at the top of articles for the sake of users using a non-default gadget. Proceed at your own risk. * Pppery * it has begun... 04:41, 21 July 2025 (UTC)
- Agree this might be excessive, but is there any solution to reduce user's confusion on this? Xiliuheshui · chat 14:39, 24 July 2025 (UTC)
"Map all coordinates using OpenStreetMap" is broken
[edit]The link generated by the template works (as in the base map, etc. display when it is visited) but the request for the list of points to display fails, returning a page reading "not for your eyes." The URL that's showing issues is e.g. [1] which is being retrieved by [2] (the link in the Wikipedia article). The Wikipedia page that the example is linked from is [3] and the KML link there [4] works fine. This issue appears to be present for any page that uses the GeoGroup template. Alex Hajnal (talk) 11:37, 10 November 2025 (UTC)
- If I click the OSM link in List of volcanoes in Saudi Arabia, it fails, consistently.
- If I click any OSM from List of Isle of Man railway lines and locations (whether asking for one section, or the whole page) it works, consistently.
- The difference that occurs to me is that the volcano page uses {{coord}}, whereas the railway page uses {{PoIgb}} which includes coordinates.
- I have notified de:Benutzer Diskussion:Plenz/OSM for Wiki v.2#Inconsistent failures of this function on en:Wikipedia -- Verbarson talkedits 15:01, 10 November 2025 (UTC)
- Checking the slippy-map links for other wiki languages [for the volcano page], Arabic's links are both broken (with Google and Bing offered), and Indonesian and German are fine (both are OSM) [the other language pages don't use the template]. Alex Hajnal (talk) 00:40, 11 November 2025 (UTC)
- I think I have characterised the issue: Geogroup is failing to pick up any coordinates that come before the first ==Heading== of the article, with the exception of coordinates with |display=title which are picked up wherever they come. I have added an unnecessary heading to List of volcanoes in Saudi Arabia, which is now working with Geogroup. I will report this on de:wiki. -- Verbarson talkedits 15:01, 11 November 2025 (UTC)
Clicking on the pins
[edit]When you open up OSM by clicking on the link in the template and click on a pin, it asks what the user expects from this mouse click. I think it would be very helpful and intuitive for clicking the pin to bring up the name included in the coordinate template. Sometimes, hovering over the pin does not make the legend scroll over to the name of the pin in the left sidebar, which is frustrating when you want to know what the pin is referring to.
