- Hi Voncercue, thanks for reporting. I have changed it accordingly. --тнояsтеn ⇔ 15:51, 29 July 2025 (UTC)
- Thank you for fixing it. I checked and only "its-mo.com" didn't work. The URL I wrote above was incorrect. I looked up the URL again, but the syntax is unique and I couldn't figure it out. However, I found that there is a version called Simple Map. The URL is this[1]. Please correct it again at this URL. Thanks to you, many problems that had been neglected for years have been resolved. Thank you very much. --Voncercue (talk) 03:59, 30 July 2025 (UTC)
- I found another URL format for its-mo.com. OK like this now? --тнояsтеn ⇔ 17:05, 30 July 2025 (UTC)
- OK, I'll leave that to your discretion. --Voncercue (talk) 22:58, 30 July 2025 (UTC)

Wikimedia maps is hidden when region is specified
[edit]Since Wikimedia maps is inside GEOTEMPLATE-LOCAL, it gets hidden when the region is specified.
<div id="GEOTEMPLATE-LOCAL"></div> is a placeholder and shouldn't contain osmEmbed.
Examples: region not specified - region specified - The RedBurn (ϕ) 07:13, 5 September 2025 (UTC)
- I'm pretty sure that this is intentional, so that we can get the regional list alongside the global list. --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 20:16, 5 September 2025 (UTC)
- But I don't see any reason, why not to always show the map (below the region specific table in the right column). I gave it a try (diff), what do you think about this solution? --тнояsтеn ⇔ 08:08, 6 September 2025 (UTC)

Decimal top line
[edit]I've been wondering why inexperienced en.Wikipedia users often give coordinates to 6 decimal points, for example, as 37.789167 -122.403333 rather than what the guidance at WP:OPCOORD suggests, which is either 37.7892 -122.4033 or 37°47′21″N 122°24′12″W. A read of WP:OPCOORD notes that 1" is precise to 22 m, but 0.000001° is (overly) precise to 7.87 cm and the more appropriate 0.0001° (4 digits) is precise to 7.87 m. It occurs to me that GeoHack/GeoTemplate might by leading these users astray by reporting Decimal coordinates at the top to 6 digits. Is there any chance this could be fixed? The problem coordinates are also propagating into Wikidata. Abductive (reasoning) 09:59, 30 September 2025 (UTC)
- Oh, I've seen users adding as many as ten places of decimals (11 μm). I think that they simply read figures off the satnav screen and trust in their accuracy. Merely taking a few steps forward ought to demonstrate the fallacy of overprecision, but they apparently don't think of that. --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 13:59, 30 September 2025 (UTC)
- They are copying from Google Maps which provides 16 digits in what is thought to be a copyright trap scheme. Abductive (reasoning) 19:46, 30 September 2025 (UTC)

- This is probably better done by having a warning when the templates use this level of precision. —TheDJ (talk • contribs) 14:43, 30 September 2025 (UTC)
- Other warnings haven't worked. Efforts to have the templates only display to a limited level of precision have been vetoed. Abductive (reasoning) 19:47, 30 September 2025 (UTC)

Add the mapping service "WaterwayMap", which shows valuable information for those wanting to better understand the hydrology, topography, environment (and more) about the point in question. Specifically, add the three lines below after "OpenRailwayMap":
|-
! scope="row" style="font-weight:normal; text-align:left;" | WaterwayMap
| [https://waterwaymap.org/#map={osmzoom}/{latdegdec}/{londegdec} Waterways]

UTM S zones for northern hemisphere locations
[edit]I was looking at the https://geohack.toolforge.org/geohack.php?pagename=Yorktown,_Virginia¶ms=37_14_4_N_76_30_35_W_region:US-VA_type:city(201) page linked from Yorktown, Virginia and noticed it listed the UTM coordinates as
| UTM | 18S 366080 4121948 | ||
|---|---|---|---|
They should be in UTM 18N (https://epsg.io/32618 ) not UTM 18S (https://epsg.io/32718) since UTM 18S is in the southern hemisphere. This seems like a bug in the script behind this tool, and I'm not sure where to report it.
Drf5n (talk) 18:18, 10 November 2025 (UTC)
- Ah -- per Universal Transverse Mercator coordinate system#Latitude bands using the latitude bands is a Military Grid Reference System thing, not a UTM thing, and Yorktown happens to be in the MGRS "S" band.
- Either way, it isn't consistent because it looks like it is using a mix of the UTM coordinate values and the MGRS grid designator.
- Maybe the problem is in https://bitbucket.org/magnusmanske/geohack/src/cd8d9365acb87f3e1d439f5eb24a1225dfa8091d/public_html/transversemercator.php#lines-94 where it is doing the math for MGRS zones instead of a UTM-like `if ($latitude >= 0) { return 'N'; } else { return 'S';}`
