Harry Christopher Wampler

[edit]

Harry Christopher "Chris" Wampler (born October 12, 1961) is a former American football defensive lineman who signed as an unrestricted free agent with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 1983 and played two seasons (1984 and 1985) with the Jacksonville Bulls of the United States Football League (USFL). He played college football at the University of Tennessee.[1][2]

College career

[edit]

Wampler played for the Tennessee Volunteers from 1979 to 1982 under head coach Johnny Majors. In 1980, as a sophomore, he started all 11 games at defensive end. As a junior, he was second on the team in "big plays" — a coaching staff metric — behind only All-American Reggie White.[3]

His senior season in 1982 was impacted by a high ankle sprain that caused him to miss three games, including Tennessee’s 21–21 tie against LSU in Baton Rouge. He returned to start eight games, including the team's 35–28 win over No. 2 Alabama.[4]
