People killed in

[edit]

I created Category:People killed in the 1790s. I almost think we should merge the people murdered categories here. It is much easier to tell people were killed than if it was murder, war killing or execution. The line between war and not and between an execution and a mob killing someone are often very fuzzy. I think it would be much more NPOV to use the killed than murdered decision. Especially since this also avoids having to parse if the killing was a murder or done in self defense.John Pack Lambert (talk) 01:03, 29 December 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Please make sure to properly parent these categories. SMasonGarrison 03:31, 29 December 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Please remember to add sort keys and templates to this categories. I've do it this time but you really need to do a better job about them. SMasonGarrison 19:17, 3 January 2026 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Polish people in Germany

[edit]

How is Category:Polish people in Germany different from Category:Polish expatriates in Germany or German people of Polish descent? I want to make sure I'm understanding how these work together.SMasonGarrison 21:08, 7 January 2026 (UTC)[reply]

  • Polish people in Germany are ethnically Polish people who live in Germany. The biggest group are Polish residents of Germany during the time of the German Empire, and maybe depending on how we use the category what could fit in the sub-cat Category:Polish people in the Kingdom of Prussia, which I am not sure if it yet exists. These are people who lived in the Province of Posen, West Prussia and East Prussia. These were areas historically in Poland, but there was no Poland as this time. There was an area of the Russian Empire called Congress Poland, but these people were not nationals of a country called Poland, they were nationals of Germany who were exthnically Polish. Ethnically these people considered themselves Polish, not German, so they are not of "German descent", any more than we would call Navajos living on the Navajo Reservation "American people of German descent". These people did move to other parts of Germany. I have ancestors who were Polish by birth who were born in the Rhineland, because their parents had moved from East Prussia to the Rhineland. It is the same idea as Czech people in Austria-Hungary, Hungarian people in Slovakia, etc. They are not of descent, they are people of this ethnicity living in a different country. Often because there is no country existant at the time that is their country. Of course some groups are still in this situation which is why we have categories like Kurdish people in Iraq.John Pack Lambert (talk) 21:15, 7 January 2026 (UTC)[reply]
Hmmm do you think naming it Ethnic Polish people in Germany might help to make the distinction? SMasonGarrison 21:57, 7 January 2026 (UTC)[reply]
