Thanks for your Potter Valley Project map
[edit]Just a quick note to say that your map of the Potter Valley Project in northern California is wonderfully clear and quickly communicates what this water transfer project does. Thanks for all your work! Rupert Clayton (talk) 17:19, 28 December 2020 (UTC)

Software used for Salton Sea drainage map
[edit]I saw commons:File:Saltonseadrainagemap.jpg recently. I like it, and it was very useful. I vaguely recall seeing maps with the same design in my school textbooks. What software did you use to make it? Enterprisey (talk!) 22:35, 30 September 2021 (UTC)
Hello Shannon1,
The river passing Tyumen is Tura, but on this map it's labelled Tavda. Could you fix it? --Yelets (talk) 01:59, 4 June 2022 (UTC)

DYK for Stikine River
[edit]On 9 November 2022, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Stikine River, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that according to Tlingit legend, the Stikine River (pictured) once flowed under a glacier? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Stikine River. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, Stikine River), and if they received a combined total of at least 416.7 views per hour (i.e., 5,000 views in 12 hours or 10,000 in 24), the hook may be added to the statistics page. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

[edit]I used a section of your map of the Missouri River as an illustration on an article about an American slave trader (John R. Crystal River, Colorado Map
[edit]Hello @Shannon1,
I'm writing to ask for more details on how you created the Map of the Roaring Fork River drainage basin in western Colorado as seen on the Crystal River Colorado page. My family lives in Marble, Colorado and I am contributing to a forthcoming guide book that maps and details wildflowers of the Crystal River Valley.
I want to create a custom map of the Crystal River, key towns, and drainages. Would you be willing to share the software you used to create your map and source data in hopes that I might be able to create a similar version focused on the Crystal River (vs wider Roaring Fork)? Alternatively, I'm interested in commissioning the creation of this map so please let me know if that is something you would be interested in helping with—the style and detail of your maps is exactly what we're looking to include in the guide book.
Thank you so much for considering! Staplen (talk) 02:44, 29 January 2024 (UTC)
- Happy to help you! I create my maps with QGIS, which is free open source GIS software. I'm not sure how familiar you are working with GIS layers, but these are my data sources. NASA's SRTM layer for topography (download link) and the National Hydrography Dataset (downloadable through USGS National Map). Labels can be added with Inkscape, Adobe Illustrator or really any image editing software.
- I can also definitely create the map for a small commission; if you're interested you can leave your email so we can discuss the terms. Shannon [ Talk ] 18:26, 29 January 2024 (UTC)

Skykomish River Map Use Question
[edit]Hello, I'm writing a guidebook for rock climbing in Index Washington and have written a short page about the Skykomish River, which runs right by the rock climbing area. I'm wondering if I might be able to use the map you made in my book. Sorry if this is not the right way to ask. Hubbbenj (talk) 06:26, 26 February 2024 (UTC)
- Yes feel free to use it. All files on Wikimedia Commons are licensed for commercial use. If you would like to commission a more detailed map I would also be happy to discuss that with you. Cheers, Shannon [ Talk ] 01:39, 5 March 2024 (UTC)
Overhaul of California High-Speed Rail
[edit]Hi Shannon1! I noted that you have been making occasional edits to California High-Speed Rail. That article is in need of a general overhaul, as it has been growing in a somewhat uncontrolled manner during the past 2 or 3 years. I made some high-level suggestions in the discussion: Talk:California_High-Speed_Rail#Clean-up_and_Harmonisation.
I'd like to ask if you would be interested in forming a team to give it a proper scrub. The article is not mainly about Californian rivers, but the project does cross quite a few along the right-of-way! I am quite new to doing serious edits on Wikipedia and am keen to take on the rewrite, but for the sake of the project, I should not be doing it by myself. Map file needing update
[edit]Hi! With the service changes being implemented today on the Los Angeles Metro Rail's C and K lines, do you think as its creator if you can help update File:Los Angeles Green Line route.png to reflect them? The C Line now terminates at Aviation/Century station, with a new southern segment of the K Line running between Aviation/Century station and Redondo Beach station. Thank you! OrdinaryScarlett (talk) 19:17, 3 November 2024 (UTC)
- Hi, yes I would be happy to, I probably won’t be able to get to it for about a week though. But considering that Aviation/96th is opening later this month, I may just wait until then to update. Shannon [ Talk ] 22:22, 3 November 2024 (UTC)
- Ah, fair enough. Thank you so much! OrdinaryScarlett (talk) 23:38, 3 November 2024 (UTC)
Create new map?
[edit]Hi! I hope this isn't too much of a bother to ask you, but I was wondering if you'd be interested in creating a dedicated infobox map for the High Desert Corridor with just its route alone, much like the ones for High Speed 2 and California High-Speed Rail? Thank you! OrdinaryScarlett (talk) 09:59, 17 December 2024 (UTC)
- I can definitely work on one! Probably be a little while before it's finished, been pretty busy. Shannon [ Talk ] 04:23, 20 February 2025 (UTC)
- Thank you so much! And no pressure of course! OrdinaryScarlett (talk) 07:29, 20 February 2025 (UTC)

Shannon1 - How do I do what you're doing?
[edit]Hello Shannon1,
Greetings. I want to create some maps of my own for a project at my own day job. How do I use the tools you're using to make my own digital maps? Is this software that requires knowledge of programming? I'm just a layman. I tried using Google My Maps, but it is not really suited to what I need to do at my job.
Thank you,

Klamath River
[edit]I stepped in to rescue Klamath River from GAR. I trimmed the "Indigenous people" section back, removing unsourced material that wasn't relevant to the river itself. You may wish to look at that section further: it was largely added by a student editor new to WP. — hike395 (talk) 12:49, 28 April 2025 (UTC)
- Thank you for helping out! The article definitely looks a lot better. I've been so swamped lately I haven't really had any time for editing. And I do mean to rewrite the remaining history sections, some day, when I'm more free. Shannon [ Talk ] 05:41, 5 May 2025 (UTC)
New map needed for California High Speed Rail article
[edit]Thanks for your map of construction status of California High Speed Rail. However, there is a problem with the map legend. The item "ready for use" is inappropriate, for a couple of reasons. The term "Ready for use" is not a recognized term, as there are several stages to revenue service - track completion, electrification complete, trainset testing completed, certified for revenue service, etc. But primarily, since this legend item does not appear anywhere in the map itself, and since revenue service is not projected to begin until 2032, including this item has the appearance of bias, and bad faith.
Can you revise it, please? I would suggest replacing this item with "electrification complete," and then you can show the SF-San Jose segment in green. Scorcheroo (talk) 19:28, 16 November 2025 (UTC)
- I responded under the topic you opened on the CAHSR discussion page. The points you raised here are different though.
- Since I was the one who edited the map to specifically read "Ready to Use", I should probably address your new points here. When we discussed the need for a map we were well aware of the technical stages. But there is always a trade-off to be made between adhering to industry standards and making things useful to the target audience. The distinction between track completion, OCS completion, dynamic testing etc. is too fine-grained to be useful. Such information should be conveyed in prose. Given the long span of the project, it was deemed appropriate to summarize track & systems into a single item, being of similar significance as major milestones like environmental clearance, starting, or completing civil construction. "Ready for use" is something the reader cares about and understands, as it clearly conveys the successful completion of all those items. In a few years, the first segments will be marked as such.
- Don't interact with the trolls too much, or you will start seeing bad faith and bias everywhere. DracaenaGuianensis (talk) 06:05, 20 November 2025 (UTC)
- Good point. Thank you. Scorcheroo (talk) 22:16, 20 November 2025 (UTC)
