Wikipedia:Education noticeboard

    Welcome to the education noticeboard
Purpose of this page Using this page

This page is for discussion related to student assignments and the Wikipedia Education Program. Please feel free to post, whether you're from a class, a potential class, or if you're a Wikipedia editor.

Topics for this board might include:

Of course, we should remain civil towards all participants and assume good faith.

There are other pages more appropriate for dealing with certain specific issues:

    • "Start a new discussion thread". Use an informative title: ==Informative title==. If a thread is related to an ongoing discussion, consider placing it under a level-3 heading within that existing discussion.
    • You should generally notify any user who is the subject of a discussion. You may use {{ping}} to do so, or simply link their username when you post your comment.
It is not required to contact students when their edits are only being discussed in the context of a class-wide problem.
    • If no comments have been made within 30 days, your post and any responses will be automatically archived.
    • Please sign all contributions, using four tilde characters "~~~~".
    • If discussion is already ongoing elsewhere or if there is a more natural location for a discussion, please continue the discussion there, and put a short note with a link to the relevant location on this page.
    • If you cannot edit this page because it is protected, please place your comments on this page and they will be addressed.

    Managing threads

If you'd like to make sure a thread does not get archived automatically after 30 days, use {{Do not archive until}} at the top of the section. Use {{User:ClueBot III/ArchiveNow}} within a section to have it archived (more or less) immediately. A brief Archives page lists them with the years in which those now inactive discussions took place.

Apparent student project on fish articles, uploading tons of copyvios to Commons

    [edit]

It seems like just today, a ton of student editors have been publishing edits to fish articles (see here for apparent confirmation it's a student project [though most edits have been directly in mainspace]). Their edits have been OK on the balance, but they've also been uploading a ton of files to Commons with no or fake licenses (I've tagged a bunch of the ones with fake licenses which you can see in my Commons contribs, while the ones with no licenses have been auto-tagged on Commons). @Ian (Wiki Ed) et al, any chance you can help with this? I have no idea what the scale of this is since I've just run across a few pages while going through CS1 errors. Jay8g [VTE] 08:13, 15 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Here are the users I've come across so far:
    Jay8g [VTE] 08:35, 15 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Found the same thing while patrolling, and initially filed an SPI for it (Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/Kynadine). Most contributions I ran across seem okay, but a couple involved superimposing numbers instead of putting refs (eg [1] instead of the actual format used for citations). 45dogs (they/them) (talk page) 10:13, 15 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]

This isn't a class we're supporting, but if you're able to get any information about the school or instructor, we'd be happy to try to help them. --LiAnna (Wiki Ed) (talk) 18:08, 17 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@LiAnna (Wiki Ed): It might be UC Davis based on a similar unofficial project last year, but frustratingly, none of this year's students are responding to talk page messages here or on Commons. Jay8g [VTE] 00:08, 18 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]
You would think responding to talk messages would be a requirement for participating in these kind of projects Trade (talk) 01:17, 19 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]
From what I'm seeing from checking a few talk pages, the students are getting welcome templates on Wikipedia and COM:AN notifications on Commons. Neither of those really suggest that they're expected to provide a response.
As I said on a similar case in 2023 (where it took us three years to stop one teacher's runaway twice-yearly lesson plan), I think we need a boilerplate talk page notice for this kind of obvious, undeclared mass student editing problem (Hello, you appear to be part of a school project which isn't following Wikipedia guidelines for educational projects, and which is causing students to break some Wikipedia policies. Please direct your teacher to WP:BADEDU.), linking to an essay which lets their teacher know that they've overlooked something big in their lesson plan and showing how they can open a conversation with us. If every apparent student gets that template, somebody will pass the link on to the teacher. Belbury (talk) 11:20, 19 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]
We may want a less derogatory shortcut. CMD (talk) 13:03, 19 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Yikes sorry my bad, I investigated that SPI and I guess I must have gotten distracted and never added notes. @LiAnna (Wiki Ed), I'm about 90% confident that's UC Davis. -- asilvering (talk) 11:32, 19 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I think we found the instructor at UC Davis; we're reaching out to them to try to get them to do it with us so we can provide guidance to hopefully avoid this problem in the future; it looks like we reached out last year but didn't hear back, so hopefully we will this time. --LiAnna (Wiki Ed) (talk) 20:06, 19 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@LiAnna (Wiki Ed): If/when you get in touch with them, can we get a full list of the student accounts? I'm concerned we've missed some and we still need to get rid of their copyvio Commons uploads. Jay8g [VTE] 05:51, 20 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Well, the person we though it was answered and it wasn't them! But they pointed us to the correct instructor, thankfully. The instructor is wrapping up the assignment for this term, but has agreed to work with us in the future so hopefully this problem won't reappear. We've asked them to either come here and post the list of usernames or email them to us and we will post them here. --LiAnna (Wiki Ed) (talk) 17:55, 20 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]
    @LiAnna (Wiki Ed): Any updates on this? Jay8g [VTE] 07:16, 2 December 2025 (UTC)[reply]
The instructor hasn't replied to our request about usernames, but we'll ping again! --LiAnna (Wiki Ed) (talk) 23:22, 2 December 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@LiAnna (Wiki Ed): Just checking in again, since it has been quite a while with no response (and I don't want to leave copyvio images hanging around on Commons if there are any we didn't find). Jay8g [VTE] 00:40, 12 December 2025 (UTC)[reply]
We still haven't heard back, sorry, but we will ping again! --LiAnna (Wiki Ed) (talk) 21:35, 12 December 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Users with sandbox guided tour in their history and no Wiki Ed student template

    [edit]

Is there a tool or other method to definitively determine a Wikipedia user's status as a Wiki Ed student, other than the presence of template {{dashboard.wikiedu.org talk course link}} on their User page or Talk page? In my role as Wikipedia mentor, I occasionally am randomly assigned a new user who happens to be a new Wiki Ed student. In these cases, I usually add additional text to the welcome message specifically about their Wiki Ed expert and the training modules (example). Today for the first time, I ran across a new Wikipedia user who has four standard Wiki Ed training posts in their history (Special:Contributions/JessamineEGH: summary: 'automatic post as part of sandbox guided tour') but no student template. So, my questions are:

    • How can I determine whether this really is a Wiki Ed student enrolled in a course (whether or not they have a course assignment), and more generally, whether any user is or is not a Wiki Ed student—is there a Cirrus search or a tool I can use?
    • Did I just happen to catch a student enrolled in a course before they added their course link templates to their user page/talk pages? I thought that was automatic in the Wiki Ed student setup procedure, and not added manually by the student themself; is their a glitch someplace?
    • Can any user (Wiki Ed-enrolled or not) participate in the training modules? I assume yes, and they will end up with those sandbox guided tour training posts in their history regardless if they are a Wiki Ed student or not, correct? I imagine it would be very hard for a non-Wiki Ed newbie to find the training modules, so that seems unlikely, however. Does this imply that any user having sandbox guided tour in their contribs is a Wiki Ed student?

The reason I need to know this is that it affects the content of the welcome message I leave new users; I don't want to miss adding the special text for Wiki Ed students and the training module link, but otoh, I don't want to add Wiki Ed info to a general welcome message to a new user if they are not, as it might confuse rather than help them. Your assistance would be welcome. Mathglot (talk) 21:03, 19 January 2026 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Mathglot! You're correct that students who are part of our program should have that template. But it's your third bullet point that's the case here. It's not actually that unusual; many edit-a-thons and education programs in non-US/Canada areas send their students to use our trainings, but the participants themselves are not part of one of our supported courses. You should always see the template you referenced if they're part of one of our courses. So you should go ahead and add a normal welcome message as you would for any other new editor! --LiAnna (Wiki Ed) (talk) 19:41, 20 January 2026 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, LiAnna. Thanks, that clarifies things. See related discussion below that incorporates some of this. Mathglot (talk) 21:36, 25 January 2026 (UTC)[reply]

    Possible undisclosed class

    [edit]

The user Special:Contributions/JoshuaRobinsonUKY, who edited their user page in Oct. and the article List of NFL players with chronic traumatic encephalopathy in Dec. stood out to me as a potential student in an undisclosed class, given the editing pattern and the usage of "UKY" in the username. I'm guessing UKY = University of Kentucky. I tried to go through the page histories of similar articles and the IP ranges of the University of Kentucky to see if I could find other students, but no dice. Not sure if this is an undisclosed class or what. wizzito | say hello! 03:16, 24 January 2026 (UTC)[reply]

I don't see any issues by this editor and there's nothing urgent about it since the fall term class likely finished by December 2025. Can you point out if there's anything wrong with this editor or systematically for this class? OhanaUnitedTalk page 15:37, 24 January 2026 (UTC)[reply]
It's just as possible that the editor is an alum, who wanted to put the school in his username. And the edit pattern might just suggest an interest in CTE in football players. --Tryptofish (talk) 23:59, 24 January 2026 (UTC)[reply]
TBF, you could both be right, but the pattern of a university in the name + the one-time edits just seemed like other undisclosed students I've seen around before. wizzito | say hello! 18:18, 29 January 2026 (UTC)[reply]

Dual welcomes: Wiki Ed, and Mentorship program

    [edit]

I don't think there is any problem here, but I just wanted to give a heads-up about the welcoming of new users who also happen to be Wiki Ed students. They may receive two welcome messages: one from Wiki Ed, and one from volunteer mentors.

Some of you may be aware of the Growth Team's Mentorship program (see also the FAQ), which is enabled on English Wikipedia (and numerous others). As part of this program, all brand new users at en-wiki are assigned a volunteer mentor to answer questions and provide other support. We often welcome our new mentees using templates available for the purpose.

I am a volunteer mentor, and I regularly welcome new users using Template:Welcome mentee. Sometimes this occurs before they receive the standard Wiki Ed welcome. I am not sure if template {{Dashboard.wikiedu.org welcome}} gets placed automatically or not, but I have noticed a few cases of students having two welcomes (examples: 1, 2, 3). I think this is fine (great, even) but I wanted to raise it just in case anybody sees an issue with dual welcomes, or wanted to comment.

In the cases where a mentee of mine already has a Wiki Ed welcome on their page, I switch to using {{Welcome mentee brief}} instead; (see example). The main {{Welcome mentee}} template automatically recognizes when a mentee is also a Wiki Ed student and customizes the welcome message, linking the student's Wiki Ed expert, their course, and the training modules (example). In addition, {{Welcome mentee}} has an optional |project= param which can be used to link a WikiProject related to their enrolled class; this example shows a student enrolled in U. Hawaii/Marine Biology, and the welcome message links WP:WikiProject Biology, where a student may find editors with specialized knowledge of biology, a useful resource to answer their more domain-specific questions. Thanks, Mathglot (talk) 18:56, 25 January 2026 (UTC)[reply]

Here's an example in the wild: User talk:Brookethiry6, welcomed by both Ian and me, and there are about 50 others like it. I don't think this is necessarily an issue, but wanted to air it just in case. Mathglot (talk) 02:24, 7 February 2026 (UTC)[reply]

Your training module controversial topics page links Wikipedia:List of controversial issues, but that is a legacy page, marked 'inactive'. Probably you want to link Wikipedia:Contentious topics, but please research this before updating the training module link. Thanks, Mathglot (talk) 09:00, 26 January 2026 (UTC)[reply]

Oh dear, I made a similar suggestion nearly ten months ago. Brianda (Wiki Ed), any updates? ClaudineChionh (she/her · talk · email · global) 09:22, 26 January 2026 (UTC)[reply]
I was just researching that, and about to link this comment last April crediting you, but you beat me to it. Mathglot (talk)
    I think we can WP:BE BOLD, here. Mathglot (talk) 09:39, 26 January 2026 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, but not in the training modules; we'll have to wait for it to be done; right. Mathglot (talk) 09:40, 26 January 2026 (UTC)[reply]

    good writeup!

    [edit]

I know I've been critical in the past of various AI topics so I wanted to give credit where it was due: I thought the writeup today on findings throughout 2025 with AI and WikiEdu was really well put together -- a lot of good data here and it explains the distinction between hallucinated sources and sources failing verification for laypeople very well. It sounds like there's a lot of research on the horizon as well.

(also, there being articles with almost every sentence failing verification is kind of crazy, that's beyond what I've seen when spot checking. to be clear I believe it but, wow.) Gnomingstuff (talk) 04:46, 30 January 2026 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for pointing this out, I also really enjoyed and appreciated the report! Sadly, I was not surprised that so much failed verification, but I appreciated seeing the results of a substantial investigation rather than my own guy. In general I have appreciated WikiEd's approach to AI; I read their training modules on AI at the start of term and thought they were excellent. ~ le 🌸 valyn (talk) 07:04, 30 January 2026 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you both, I'm glad it was useful. --LiAnna (Wiki Ed) (talk) 16:40, 30 January 2026 (UTC)[reply]
    Ditto. A very informative piece. --Elmidae (talk · contribs) 20:34, 30 January 2026 (UTC)[reply]
I'll say what I've said elsewhere: I was always told that if I submitted work I didn't write and presented it as my own, I'd get a zero on the assignment and possibly get an automatic failure in the class (or even kicked out of school with scholarships revoked in university). Need help locating instructor

    [edit]

There's a class assignment incident under discussion at WP:VPM#"Grid architecture" pages. If anybody knows how to get in touch with the instructor, or figure out who that might be, your assistance would be appreciated. I don't see any real harm to the project being done, so I think all that should happen is the instructor needs to be made aware of WP:ASSIGN, but without any response from any of the students, I don't see any way to do that. I'd really like to avoid this getting escalated to pages being deleted. RoySmith (talk) 16:53, 6 February 2026 (UTC)[reply]

I pinged one of the staff of the group in India (since it sounds like that's where these students are) that does a lot of education work to see if they can help. --LiAnna (Wiki Ed) (talk) 17:01, 6 February 2026 (UTC)[reply]
