For questions or suggestions one can use the talk pages: Talk:Graphics Lab, Talk:Illustrations, Talk:Photographs and Talk:Maps.
This specific page is the requests page for the illustration workshop. Anyone can make a request for an illustration to be improved or created for a Wikipedia article. Clicking the "New Request" button will bring you to a standard template for submitting requests, as well as general advice that should be followed. Requests for healthcare related images may be make at MDWiki:WikiProjectMed:Requested_images.

Log and angle

- Article(s)
- Hyperbolic sector#Hyperbolic logarithm
- Request
- In the article-section Hyperbolic sector#Hyperbolic logarithm one finds the following text:
"To accommodate the case of negative logarithms and the corresponding negative hyperbolic angles, different hyperbolic sectors are constructed according to whether x is greater or less than one. A variable right triangle with area 1/2 is The isosceles case is The natural logarithm is known as the area under y = 1/x between one and x. A positive hyperbolic angle is given by the area of A negative hyperbolic angle is given by the negative of the area This convention is in accord with a negative natural logarithm for x in (0,1)."
The object is to show that hyperbolic sector area to y = 1/x is the same as the log area. There are two cases: x in (0,1) and x > 1. The method uses addition and subtraction of right triangles. Illustrations are requested to show the equality of areas. — Rgdboer (talk) 22:35, 6 June 2025 (UTC)

- I can't think of a way to show that the areas are equal. Only after drawing this, I realised that I could prove it only if S is the midpoint of OR. In the above diagram, if S is at 1, R must be at 2, unless b can be shown to equal d.
- Can you sketch, perhaps on paper, how you could explain it? Cheers, cmɢʟee⎆τaʟκ 22:43, 7 June 2025 (UTC)
- Ok, your diagram does combine the two given. Some of your variables are supposed constant: S = (1,0) so that P = (1,1). Then 0PS is triangle T given in the text. Next R = (x. 0) so Q = (x, 1/x) so triangle 0QR is the variable triangle called V in the text. Both of these triangles have area 0.5 . The argument is similar to a tangram puzzle where blocks are moved around. Here one triangle is added to a figure, then the other triangle removed. Since they both have area ½ the area after the addition and subtraction is the same as area before. Try considering only x > 1 first (as in your illustration) since complications arise due to signed areas in the general case. — Rgdboer (talk) 21:57, 8 June 2025 (UTC)

- Reading about Tangrams led me to Tiling puzzle which is more accurate here, except for shapes changing while area is constant. Using the notation you have provided, the proof runs as follows:
POQ = PSRQ + POS − QOR. Then since area POS = area QOR, conclude area POQ = area PSRQ. — Rgdboer (talk) 22:17, 10 June 2025 (UTC)
- I'll redraw it with triangle T as in the article. cmɢʟee⎆τaʟκ 10:06, 11 June 2025 (UTC)
- @Cmglee: But your notation is more concise, just the labels P, Q, R, S. The lower case letters are of course superfluous. The article text can be altered with the OPQRS argument. — Rgdboer (talk) 21:43, 11 June 2025 (UTC)
- Thanks, @Rgdboer: I've updated it using your hint. It now works for any two points in the first quadrant, not just for x > 1. cmɢʟee⎆τaʟκ 22:46, 11 June 2025 (UTC)
- Thank you cmglee for a splendid image of a complex notion. The OPQRS geometry makes unnecessary the assumption that P=(1,1). The naturalness of the notation clarifies the argument. The reversed orientation of negative areas need not confuse the introduction here of geometry referring to some ideas of calculus. The reference to a book by Isaak Yaglom shows this argument is not original research. — Rgdboer (talk) 21:20, 12 June 2025 (UTC)
- My pleasure and thanks. Glad it's now clear. cmɢʟee⎆τaʟκ 10:47, 13 June 2025 (UTC)

Gangster territories in 1920s Chicago
[edit]- Request
I'm after an updated copy of the map that is shown at https://www.newspapers.com/article/chicago-tribune-1920s30s-gangster-map/174851196/. It's taken from The Chicago Tribune of 16 February 1936, so technically still in copyright, thus the need for a fresh copy. There's a version at http://www.encyclopedia.chicagohistory.org/pages/1768.html, which is a lot cleaner, with much of the superfluous nameing taken away, which is also what I'm after. Any help would be much appreciated. Cheers - SchroCat (talk) 19:51, 19 June 2025 (UTC)

- Hi! I was wondering if someone can kindly please vectorize the flag and coat of arms of Provisional Government of Saskatchewan? The flag was designed by Louis Riel and the description of the flag by Father Vital Fourmond (who was a witness to the provisional government's proclamation on 19 March 1885) is found on both pages linked above. The flag consists of the design of an old flag of France with a blue heraldic shield with three Fleurs-de-lis though Riel altered this design by placing the Immaculate Heart of Mary (a Catholic symbol) on the shield. Although Father Fourmond described just the flag, it appears that by using a design with a heraldic shield, Riel had also created the coat of arms for the provisional government even if it wasn't his intention. The coat of arms on the PNG version of the flag uses a Sodacan-style for the shield and Fleurs-de-lis, the Immaculate Heart on the PNG version uses File:Immaculate Heart of Mary.svg but the design of that clashes with the Sodacan style for the shield and Fleurs-de-lis so I ask that for the SVG version, a Sodacan-style version of the Immaculate Heart is used instead. I have added SVG Sodacan-style versions of the designs to use as bases so the request can be done more quickly. Thanks in advance! -- 109.77.208.221 (talk) 22:21, 30 June 2025 (UTC)

- Hi! I was wondering if someone can kindly please the coat of arms of New Castle, Delaware (which is displayed on the flag) is uploaded as a separate file. The coat of arms is a heraldic shield split into four corners that displays the flags of four countries which have all controlled New Castle over the years. On the top-left: the Netherlands. On the top-right: Sweden. On the Bottom-left: Britain (unusually they are are represented by the "Flag of Great Britain" that was used at the time of their control rather than the modern day Union Jack, especially considering New Castle represents the Netherlands with its modern day flag rather than its historical one). On the bottom-right: the United States, which New Castle is currently part of (this part uses a version of the Great Seal of the United States rather than the flag). I'll be grateful to see this done. Thanks in advance!-- 109.77.208.221 (talk) 15:47, 6 July 2025 (UTC)
