Suspected sockpuppets

[edit]

Believe this to be related to current issue of sock/meatpuppeting in art related articles. In their unblock request An undesired fidelity referred to how "A bibliography has been circulated via community mailing list. The call-to-action did not promote any one institution or individual, but simply listed pages that needed to be improved, and linked to those initiatives."[1] In the request they also made repeated inference to how they were acting against what they regarded as male-biased editing ("The page I created, Spiritual America (gallery)—a woman‑led gallery—was deleted", "as part of broader hostility toward women on Wikipedia", "I request a woman‑led or otherwise neutral arbitration", "Edit histories since 2008 on her BLP show recurring hostility and gendered aggression"). A similar mention of a "call to action" if you will was made by Alyssadavisgallery as part of a harassment report to ANI yesterday (A call to improve pages related to Marcel Duchamp and his peers was broadcast over art world mailing list with links to diffs) which further made reference to male-biased editing such as edits made to deal with their activity removed a "female-founded art gallery with notability for mounting first presentation of artwork by Richard Prince; page erases women's contributions".[2]

The account Penelopemachine has meanwhile suddenly appeared from dormancy to immediately restore the page for "Spiritual America" (which was specifically name-checked above) and has history of similar-ish language in their edits, such as this edit summary[3] that read "Women did not come up with the concept of equality. That is a male yardstick. Distinguish feminism from gender studies. Include academic citations for why there is no feminist point of view" along with their userpage which previously described them as a "Writer and art historian working ad hoc to map the concerns of art's institutions and structures onto Wikipedia pages that can claim to represent the field" as well as their wish to deal with the issue of "the exclusion of minority voices who have successfully revolutionized the discourse".

Further similarity of topics includes how a previous version of the user page for Alyssadavisgallery[4] which was CSD'd yesterday made reference to both UbuWeb and Federated Wiki which Penelopemachine has edited pages for as well[5][6]. They have also edited the article for Mary Boone[7], which An undesired fidelity has also edited in[8].

Overall it seems that the account Penelopemachine is more than likely functioning as a meatpuppet in this instance (specifically via WP:STEALTH canvassing) as despite having such a low amount of contributions there is significant overlap in terms of articles they edit or mention, language used around gender to do with their editing goals, and self-description as an art historian that matches the sort of person we know is involved in this issue and therefore is likely to have received this email. Have asked for a CU check just in case it's specifically the same person just for clarity and also because part of this requires checking a deleted page. User has now added several of the same articles as previous sock/meat issues (namely Spiritual America, Rhonda Roland Shearer, Art Science Research Laboratory, and Tout-Fait: The Marcel Duchamp Studies Online Journal) along with aspersions about myself to a Wiki group page, so I'd say this confirms with certainty this is someone linked to the above sock/meatpuppet[9] Rambling Rambler (talk) 21:03, 18 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Ivanvector: - I don't remember how I got that result. I can't recreate it. I suggest we go with your findings. PhilKnight (talk) 13:21, 19 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
