Review needed

[edit]

Requesting a review of my draft on Draft:Deoghar Municipal Corporation (DMC).I know there’s currently a redirect to Deoghar, but the corporation and the city are separate entities. One is the municipal administration, the other one is the city's page. Flashthomsom (talk) 19:37, 4 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

I think there are too many bullet points. Zalaraz (talk) 01:30, 5 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

From WikiProject Maharashtra

[edit]

As highlighted in this topic, I have created a new category for Marathi film posters. Please add files to it. Cheers! Kingsacrificer (talk) 09:37, 5 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

DO NOT ADD POSTERS TO THIS CATEGORY
As mentioned by @Morekar here, there already exists a Category:Film posters for Marathi-language films. Please use that. Kingsacrificer (talk) 10:42, 5 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

List of films per language

[edit]

As someone in the talk page of this article mentioned, should silent films be considered Marathi films based on the crew only? This applies to films of all languages, of course. Kingsacrificer (talk) 09:56, 5 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

I think it’s considered because of the intertitles. The silent films used Marathi intertitles, so they are included in the list of Marathi films. Morekar (talk) 10:54, 5 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I've opened a discussion on [WP:Wikiproject Film] to gather global consensus on this topic. Kingsacrificer (talk) 11:14, 5 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Mahadev Ranade

[edit]

The Pune Vachan Mandir library mentions that Mahadev Ranade helped in its establishment.

The library was founded in 1848. Ranade was born in 1842. How is a 6 year old going to establish this?

I came across this while editing an article on Krushnashastri Chiplunkar, who was actually the founder of the library. Even a Hindustan Times article cited this.

Anybody has a clear view of the matter, or can visit the library to find out? Kingsacrificer (talk) 19:48, 6 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Comments would be welcome, just wondering which one of these five names should be the Wikipedia title of the wonderful snack/food. A Requested move discussion would be needed, but for now I just went to the page, saw 'papadum' wasn't in the first mention, added it, and wondering what others think. Thanks. English in articles about India

[edit]

I'm not sure about any of the following.

When looking at pages about Hindu mythology or about Indian history in general, I often come across pages that are written in very odd English. Pages that use a lot of translations from Sanskrit often have a lot of it.

Some use so many untranslated Sanskrit words that the page is very difficult to read for somebody who isn't familiar with the jargon. Pages on Ancient Geek mythology, for instance, usually don't use anything like as much untranslated Greek vocabulary as some of these ones do Sanskrit. It seems like it would be a good idea to try to minimise this. This is the English Wikipedia, and it would be good if it can be easily readable to English speakers. For instance, I thought that "a huge boat which housed his family, saptarishi, nine types of seeds, and animals to repopulate the earth" would be better as "a huge boat which housed his family, the Seven Sages, nine types of seeds, and animals to repopulate the earth", for the benefit of people who don't know who or what "saptarishi" is supposed to be.

As well as this, there's also some mangled grammar, such as the lack of a "the" or a capital letter in "saptarishi" above.

I've seen odder examples of both of these things than those, but that was one that I could find easily. I know that some pages are marked as "Indian English", but it's difficult for me to tell, as somebody who isn't in India, whether these are Indian English that's supposed to be like that or just mangled English that should be cleaned up.

I didn't like to edit these things. It wasn't clear whether these are just things that could be fixed or whether there are other people that want them like that and there's some sort of policy about it. Is there any policy about it? Wombat140 (talk) 22:17, 8 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Untranslated Sanskrit jargon is certainly sub-optimal, to say the least. And yes, it is all too common. Contributors need to understand that they are writing for a global English-speaking readership, and that they cannot assume readers know any of this.
As for mangled grammar, sadly some contributors have more confidence than is deserved in their ability to write in English, of any dialect. Indian English is unique, but in its written form it differs from other dialects mostly in vocabulary and idiom, as I understand it. If it looks grammatically wrong to a native British English or American English speaker say, one can fairly reliably assume it is. AndyTheGrump (talk) 22:32, 8 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
It is probably not an issue for you to be bold and copyedit prose to be more accessible for a wider audience. Dealing with jargon can be difficult as those who know the jargon may not realise it is jargon. CMD (talk) 03:48, 9 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Link some articles so we can copyedit them. Kingsacrificer (talk) 20:28, 9 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Epic-Puranic chronology has some of both, and also a lot of other problems. It would arguably be better to cut it down to being mostly just a discussion of what the epics and Puranas say about what happened when, and leave the discussion of scholars who claim that the dates given are actually accurate to another article, the same as articles such as Patriarchs (Bible) can discuss when the patriarchs were supposed to have lived without it being an article about creationism. Possibly, I'm not really sure what article the discussion of scholars who claim that it's actually true should be put into, if so, maybe you have more idea, and I can't remember which others I've seen that are a mess, except for the one I quoted above, Vaivasvata Manu, which I've fixed. Can someone create this article?

[edit]

Aakreit is a film directed by Amol Palekar in 1981, infact it is his first directorial film. I want to request someone experienced to create an article on the same. Kingsacrificer (talk) 20:27, 9 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Discussion at Talk:Sati (practice)

[edit]

There is an ongoing discussion (Talk:Sati (practice)#Source misrepresentation in lead) regarding recent changes made to the lead of Sati (practice). The mention of the practice's largely historical nature was removed from the lead sentence, and parts about its history were also removed and altered. I invite interested editors to participate in the discussion. UnpetitproleX (talk) 15:46, 15 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
