Question for the Brits

[edit]

Just came across 2012 BFI London Film Festival Awards, which is just about the end-of-festival awards that were presented in 2012 and not about the whole festival. Obviously that's not how we write about film festivals ordinarily — while some film festivals {Cannes, Berlin, Toronto, Sundance, etc.) do have separate articles about each year's event, they're supposed to be complete articles about the entire event, including as complete as possible a listing of all the films that screened at the festival, with that year's award winners certainly coverable in a subsection of that larger article but not isolated as their own independent article topic all by themselves.

BFI London does have such articles in place for 2022, 2023 and 2024, but not yet for earlier years, while this appears to be the only one that treats the award announcements as a standalone topic in their own right while pretending that nothing else about the rest of the festival was notable at all.

Obviously, this should be converted into a more thorough and complete article about the 2012 BFI festival as a whole, if possible — but if it can't, then it's unclear that it would actually be needed in its existing form. So do any British editors here have access to resources (media coverage, the 2012 film schedule listings, etc.) that could get it looking more like individual-year film festival articles are supposed to look? Bearcat (talk) 04:16, 4 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]

I attended the festival and probably have the festival programme somewhere. The Times and Evening Standard probably have good articles with the data. Unfortunately I don't have time to expand it at the moment. There is some info about the festival in the main festival page under the section for 2012 to 2017 that could go in there and this article lists the opening and closing night films https://www2.bfi.org.uk/news-opinion/news-bfi/features/every-bfi-london-film-festival-opening-night-film so some basic updates could be made easily to convert it into an article not just about the awards. If anyone does have time, this webpage is good for trying to create articles for earlier years although it's not necessarily easy to tie up that to what was actually screened based on one I tried to do. https://web.archive.org/web/20090113202852/http://ftvdb.bfi.org.uk/sift/eventseries/825 I have started to create one for the 25th anniversary and would like to do one for the first festival at some point. Requesting help from experienced film editors on the Animal Crackers (1930 film) article

[edit]

An editor submitted the article to peer review as he wanted to make the article better, and possibly reach FA or GA status, in advance of the film entering into the public domain in January 2026.

I came across the listing and decided to page you guys here at WP:FILM. The article is currently well-researched but needs a lot of editing for tone, style, conciseness, as well as falling in line with FA-level articles about films. I'm not very knowledgeable on editing film stuff in WP, but thought you guys might be a help.

I've already given some feedback on the peer review page and made some edits. Please feel free to chime in with advice, insight and opinions. CVDX (talk) 21:03, 13 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Disagreement at Talk:Deemak

[edit]

Hi all. There is an active disagreement at Talk:Deemak about the stability of the article for a recent Pakistani film, whether if it meets Wikipedia guidelines or not. Any helpful comments by the experienced editors are most welcomed, thank you! M. Billoo 23:08, 13 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]

There is a discussion on whether to include actors in the Godzilla article. It can be found at Talk:Godzilla (1954 film)#Poster actors. Any input from project members would be very much appreciated. Thanks. Lord Sjones23 (talk - contributions) 05:11, 14 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Me and an IP have discussed the issue of how some information on the Zilla (Godzilla) article have been presented, or rather misrepresented -- and we both have come to an agreement on how to improve the article. However, the overhaul of an entire article cannot rest on the decision of two editors. Therefore, I invite those interested to the discussion at the article's talk page and provide your two cents. Some of the edits we've proposed may invoke resistance, or even controversy, so mass consensus is needed before we implement our edits. Armegon (talk) 05:57, 14 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]

ComingSoon.net

[edit]

In every List of American films articles after 2011, ComingSoon.net is, most of the time, cited. However, all of the cited sources redirect to an error message. Should we remove them? Ryanisgreat4444 (talk) 16:34, 16 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]

The sources should be updated if there are new URLs or if archived ones need to be used instead. ComingSoon.net still exists and should not be blanket removed. - adamstom97 (talk) 17:00, 16 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Year of film release?

[edit]

Does D.E.B.S. (2004 film) belong in List of American films of 2004, the year it premiered at Sundance, or List of American films of 2005, the year it went wide release in the United States? Guidelines in the MOS say to go with the earliest release date, but User:Ryanisgreat4444 thinks this is ignored in practice. Thoughts? 2001:8F8:172B:3F78:1829:9AC2:4EBC:716C (talk) 16:50, 16 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Helloo, I would really appreciate some clarification on this. Should films be sorted by their day of wide release of United States or the earliest day of premiere? 2001:8F8:172B:3F78:88F0:561B:76C2:ACCA (talk) 21:19, 17 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I don't really work much on these articles, but observing the principles of WP:FILMRELEASE would make more sense to me, otherwise you are going to end up with inconsistencies i.e. D.E.B.S. (2004 film) is described as a 2004 film (and disambiguated to that effect) on the basis its earliest public release was in 2004 in the United States. Therefore it would be slightly odd to put it in the 2005 list. If the tables have different criteria (such as when the film went on general release) then that should be clearer. Unfortunately we have lost another project friend and great contributor, User:Krimuk2.0. He died in early April, less than a month after MarnetteD. You may remember him for his excellent FA work on some of the top Hollywood actresses. RIP Krimuk. ♦ Dr. Blofeld 15:07, 19 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Request for neutral review: cast addition for Detective Chinatown 1900

[edit]

Hi all,

I’m posting with a conflict of interest disclosure. I’m an actor who appeared in Detective Chinatown 1900 (2024), a movie listed on Wikipedia.

About a month ago, I made a request on the article’s Talk page to be added to the cast list based on my credited, speaking role (Thomas Lawrence), and provided multiple sources:

Talk:Detective Chinatown 1900#Request to add actor to cast list

I haven’t received a response yet, and I’m hoping a neutral editor could take a look and, if appropriate, make the addition. I’ve avoided editing the article directly due to COI.

Thanks in advance!

Notice

The article Insight Film Festival has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Tagged as Unreferenced and for Notability concerns for 14 years. Tagged for COI concerns for 11 years. No other language has a reliably sourced article from which to translate.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Deletion of Category:Films directed by Mariah Carey

[edit]

How do we feel about this close and potential ramifications? --woodensuperman 08:21, 27 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]

I can't speak for everyone, but if there is only one work from a director, the category does seem a null point. You'd presumably click it when within the article and only find yourself re-directed back to the only film article again. I wouldn't stress the importance of Wikipedia categories too much as they are very rarely viewed by readers in general. Andrzejbanas (talk) 14:44, 4 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Submission

[edit]

Please review my draft: draft:Avatar: Seven Havens Rafael Hello! 13:27, 1 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]

It is a part of Wikiproject film. Rafael Hello! 13:28, 1 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
WP:TV is probably the more appropriate place since this is for a TV series. I expect this submission will be declined since the draft is just a few sentences. There is also a separate, incorrectly titled draft already at Draft:Avatar:Seven Havens which this should probably be merged to. - adamstom97 (talk) 13:54, 1 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Michael Madsen ITN nom

[edit]

Michael Madsen's nomination is two days from lapsing on WP:ITN/C#RD: Michael Madsen, unfortunately due to the stubiness of the article. The article needs some fleshing out in the Career section. Daß Wölf 16:45, 7 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]

New York Times user poll.

[edit]

Is the New York Times reader poll allowed ? I thought user polls in general weren’t. Gongjo (talk) 18:44, 8 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]

I was somewhat wondering about this myself. Any chance the poll itself has received coverage in other sources? DonIago (talk) 20:22, 8 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, among them:
UrielAcosta (talk) 22:03, 8 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Those are about a different list. We are talking about the readers poll which could be susceptible to brigading. Gongjo (talk) 23:03, 8 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I gather this is about this list. It should not be cited on Wikipedia. Per WP:USERGEN, Although review aggregators (such as Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic) may be reliable when summarizing experts, the ratings and opinions of their users (including the reported rating averages) are not. The same principles apply here. TompaDompa (talk) 23:47, 8 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I’ll remove them Gongjo (talk) 01:57, 9 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Agreed. The other issue is that the editor who has been adding the poll to articles didn't stop at 100; here's number 354, for example. The Times article is paywalled so I don't understand why the list extends beyond 100, but my suspicion is that they presented the readers with a list of films and asked them to pick their favourites. If true, this would make the list even more deserving of exclusion. Barry Wom (talk) 08:23, 9 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Proposal to include Heart of Noir as an external resource for film noir entries

[edit]

I’d like to propose the addition of a new educational resource to the external links section of relevant film pages, particularly those covering classic film noir titles.

  • Heart of Noir (https://heartofnoir.com) is a non-commercial, free-access site that hosts a searchable directory of over 1,000 noir films, with entries that include cast/crew info, scene imagery, reviews, and curated summaries. The site also publishes short articles and interviews from scholars such as Foster Hirsch (Brooklyn College), Grant Tracey (University of Northern Iowa), and Donald Brackett, among others.

Edited by Michael Bayer of Johns Hopkins University and promoted via the H-Film academic consortium, the site is designed for both new and seasoned noir fans. Its goal is to promote understanding and appreciation of the genre culturally, aesthetically, and historically.

Would this be considered an appropriate external link for inclusion on pages covering noir-era films (especially those that are less thoroughly documented)?

Thanks for your time and feedback! Leslievdz (talk) 20:23, 10 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
