Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Football#Tables of international goals

    [edit]
    1. Are managers "expatriate sportspeople" per categories? I can't link a specific example, but I've seen people remove them from it.
    2. Are assistant managers or other coaching staff covered by "expatriate football managers in ___"? I would say no, but this all comes under the difference between the words "manager" and "coach", which depends on era, language, country and even clubs' own definitions.

    Unknown Temptation (talk) 19:59, 8 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

    I’d say definitely yes for 1. JTtheOG (talk) 20:08, 8 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Category:Association football managers is not under Category:Sportspeople so they should not be under expatriate sportspeople. Kaffet i halsen (talk) 20:08, 8 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
    1) Yes, I have always classed expatriate managers as expatriate sports people;
    2) No, non-managers are not a 'manager' and should not be in the 'manager' category. GiantSnowman 20:18, 8 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Kaffet i halsen: You're correct technically, but in my opinion that's a strange decision someone has decided upon. To claim that "People in sports" are not "sportspeople" is clearly for convenience due to the latter being the name chosen long ago for the category tree of "players of sports", when in reality the two terms are interchangeable. Removing the football managers from the Sportspeople fork would be unhelpful in accurately explaining their role in the other country, and would also clutter up the wider expatriate lists where readers uninterested in sports would find them flooded with sports coaches. Crowsus (talk) 22:20, 8 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Crowsus, I think there would still be a need to have one word that gathers all on-field "players", and one for them including coaches et cetera. Anyhow, I see the usefulness with them being grouped together here as they all belong to sports as industry. By renaming the categories "sports expatriates" instead of "expatriate sportspeople" we would have a name that doesn't conflict with the other "sportspeople" use and looks to have a higher outside-Wikipedia use. Kaffet i halsen (talk) 20:16, 10 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
At the same time, the GOAT Pep Guardiola is in Category:Expatriate football managers in England, which is a subcat of Category:Expatriate sportspeople in England. JTtheOG (talk) 01:59, 9 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Managers are sportspeople so should be added in my view. Coaches and assistant managers are not managers and so should not be added there. Joseph2302 (talk) 11:22, 9 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I presume that last point doesn't cover anyone styled as "head coach"? Thomas Tuchel isn't officially the manager of England but I am pretty sure everyone considers him to actually hold that post, regardless of what his official job title is..... -- ChrisTheDude (talk) 11:44, 9 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
    A 'head coach' is just a manager. GiantSnowman 18:11, 9 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, head coach is a manager, any other coach is not. Joseph2302 (talk) 18:21, 9 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

We already have Wikipedia:WikiProject Football/Article alerts for people to track AFDs, PRODs etc. Thus, we don't really require these notifications here for every PROD listed. If there's a specific need e.g. AFDs that have not attracted many editors, then that's sensible to post here, but not every PROD. Joseph2302 (talk) 10:35, 10 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Talk about ouch on my eyes, some of those tables are so red, can't read whatever the text is on them! :/ Govvy (talk) 10:21, 12 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

rather surprisingly the black on red passes the colour contrast check! I find them difficult to read, and as for the redlink on red.... Spike 'em (talk) 08:53, 15 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

    Appearances table

    [edit]

Could someone help me with how to list appearances at 2025–26 Everton F.C. (women) season? RossEvans19 (talk) 13:32, 12 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

What are you having problems with? The format? The data itself? --SuperJew (talk) 18:37, 12 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, the data itself unfortunately haha - It may sound silly but I'm struggling to understand how to add on the substitute appearances RossEvans19 (talk) 18:42, 12 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Just enter them with a + in between. For example player A played 3 matches as a starter, so she has 3; player B started 2 matches and was subbed on 1 match, so she has 2+1; player C was subbed on 2 matches, so she has 0+2. Maybe have a look here will help you out. The total column is calculated automatically. BTW, especially with teams such as Everton competing in multiple competitions, I'd suggest using comments, such as was done here (though that was written as a hardcoded wikitable not using templates so no automatic tallying there). Anyways, let me know if that helps you out, or you need anything else. --SuperJew (talk) 18:55, 12 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you very much SuperJew! Reading it like that makes it much clearer, and thank you for the examples :) RossEvans19 (talk) 23:56, 12 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I didn't realise we were doing seasons on woman's football. Guess I am out of the loop!! Govvy (talk) 10:10, 13 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
    [edit]

Hi!  Sweden U21 should have the link Sweden national under-21 football team, not Sweden men's national under-21 football team (there is no women's U21 team). Mattias321 (talk) 19:53, 14 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

It seems to be down to the attempts to differentiate between Sweden men's national football team and Sweden women's national football team in {{Country data Sweden}}, whereby men's is the default team if no |mw= is set. (There also seems to be pre-existing misuse of |mw= to link to Sweden Olympic football team.)
    The code creates a football link by | link alias-football = Sweden {{{mw|men's}}} {{#ifeq:{{{mw|}}}|Olympic||national}} {{{age|}}} football team
When the senior men's team was moved from Sweden national football team, no corresponding changes were done at youth level.
I'm not entirely sure how to go about fixing this but will have a think. Are there any youth-level women's teams for Sweden, as I wouldn't want to break anything else?
@S.A. Julio: who introduced this to fix the senior team ({{fb}} / {{fbw}}) templates in case they can think of a solution. Spike 'em (talk) 10:14, 15 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Should be resolved, though one redirect for a youth team seems like a relatively minor issue. S.A. Julio (talk) 17:32, 15 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

    Separatist agendas

    [edit]

Again, and again AND AGAIN? Oleguer Presas. True, this is maybe the footballer that most identifies with Catalonia as a nation, but he IS Spanish period! Don't these people understand this?!?

    Attentively RevampedEditor (talk) 12:10, 16 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @RevampedEditor, as I mentioned in the talk page, you can check the 2018 RfC on use of Spanish regional identity in biography leads, the consensus is that for people (like Oleguer) who self-identify as Catalan there is no point in calling them Spanish, regardless of how you want to identify them. Regards, Bsckr (talk) 12:59, 16 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
What happened to WP:AGF? You seem very intolerant of edits supported by a quoted RfC (see also this separatist nonsense).
Him being a footballer doesn't override that. Spike 'em (talk) 13:13, 16 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
OK, i apologise (for the use of "nonsense"), could have phrased it better. But it's not just a matter of how "I" (as you point out) identify a given subject, i've seen this approach tried/used time and time again at WP only to be summarily reverted/dismissed, by several established users in the community.
Mr. Presas indeed identifies himself as a staunch Catalan, but he IS Spanish until Catalonia can gain (if) independence, i'm afraid that's how WP sees it.
I will wait for more inputs before i edit in the article again. Regards as well. RevampedEditor (talk) 13:51, 16 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Again, it looks more like that's how you see it, not Wikipedia,
Also, what does independence have to do with it? Are you also pressing for Scottish football players to be described as British unless they secede? Bsckr (talk) 08:36, 17 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Nope, never said any of that (the "pressing for Scottish footballers" bit, for all i'm aware cases are somewhat different). Regarding this case (and the false accusation of this being MY idea instead of WP's), please refer to User:Panenkazo for more details. I'm not going to waste two hours trying to find the pertinent thread (but their talkpage should give you an idea of the timeframe), but i think to say that they were reverted AND blocked should be enough on wether this is a project guideline or something that just popped out of my head.

About Oleguer, i repeat i will leave things as they are currently if it turns out to be what the majority wants (i also repeat that, per past experience, it does not seem to be the case). Happy weekend! --RevampedEditor (talk) 11:39, 17 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

My reading of things is that if the RfC is worded in such a way, it stands as concerning Oleguer. It's harder to make the argument for people who chose to play for Spain 100 times like Piqué (!) and Xavi. Unknown Temptation (talk) 12:50, 17 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
He is Spanish. There is argument for describing him as 'Spanish-Catalan', but NOT just 'Catalan'. GiantSnowman 18:21, 17 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Did you read the RfC above? Spike 'em (talk) 18:48, 17 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
The bit where it says "if sources generally use a certain identity"? And the sources say Spanish? 1, 2, 3 etc. GiantSnowman 18:57, 17 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
What about the next clause and it is clear that the person self-identifies with that identity? Spike 'em (talk) 19:51, 17 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
    It's an and, not an or. GiantSnowman 20:45, 17 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

The article seems to contain too many templates, which makes it so that all subsections automatically open in mobile view, making it difficult to navigate. Is there a way to fix this? Nehme1499 (talk) 02:22, 17 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

    International career statistics (goals)

    [edit]

An IP has been editing (seemingly at random) the List of International Goals scored by various footballers. His approach is to merge any cells that are vertical neighbours which have the same content. Not only do these include the stadium or the competition, but also opponents (even if the matches are years apart) and scorelines. I’ve reverted several, but there are many that remain, such as Evan Ferguson. Daemonickangaroo2018 (talk) 09:13, 17 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Urgh, that table is unintelligible. I have similar issues on tables in cricket articles and there I try to apply a rule that I only merge cells if all the columns to the left are also merged (using this it could have a set of cells in column 2 rowspanned across 4 rows followed by 2 separate rowspans of 2 in column 3). Just because you can use a rowspan, doesn't mean you should do it! Spike 'em (talk) 09:21, 17 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Looking at that Evan Ferguson table, I don't have any huge beef with the merging of other columns, but the merged score column looks absolutely ridiculous. I just blinked at it for a couple of minutes trying to figure it out before it clicked...... -- ChrisTheDude (talk) 09:50, 17 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Columns should not be merged per this discussion. Nehme1499 (talk) 11:46, 17 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, "venues, opponents and competitions should not be rowspanned across different matches. Instead, they should be rowspanned within the same match". Wikipedia:WikiProject Football/Players also refers to the discussion. Robby.is.on (talk) 12:58, 17 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
It is a LTA South East Asian (Indonesia and Vietnam usually) IP hopper who I have been chasing the last few days! GiantSnowman 18:58, 17 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
