Weird writing...

[edit]

"He became the first American to enter and be selected in an NBA draft directly after graduating from high school since the league first implemented age restriction rules in 2005"

That is not even true. That is NOT what the reference articles said. And, it is just horrendous writing. 72.204.78.102 (talk) 17:06, 1 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I removed it. He was in a postgraduate year after high school. —Bagumba (talk) 04:34, 24 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Sushidude21!: Can you explain your restoring the disputed text. You didn't provide an edit summary. Thanks. —Bagumba (talk) 09:26, 24 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
The information is true, although I do agree the phrasing is a bit weird. It's possible that 72.204.78.102 is thinking of Thon Maker, who's not American. Sushidude21! (talk) 09:46, 24 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
This from NBC Sports more accurately describes his situation:

Anfernee Simons spent the last year playing high school basketball. But because he did so as a fifth-year prep after technically graduating from high school last year and turns 19 in June, he’s eligible for the NBA draft.[1]

He had already graduated from high school, and had a postgraduate year at a prep school the year after, where he continued playing high school ball. He wasn't exactly "straight out" of HS. —Bagumba (talk) 10:32, 24 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
This is good but it doesn't prove that he was the first since 2005 so this bit might need to be abandoned or have a [citation needed] tag. Sushidude21! (talk) 10:34, 24 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
It seems most of the details are already at Anfernee Simons § High school career. We could explicitly add there that he graduated from HS already. That's currently implied by his doing a postgrad year, but many readers don't know how that works. I don't think the "first" can be true though, since he graduated HS already. —Bagumba (talk) 10:42, 24 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I've improve the text and sourcing on his HS graduation and subsequent postgrad year. Actually, the "first" claim about going directly from HS wasn't even in the lead's Fansided source (throwing out the fact that it isn't reliable per WP:NBARSU). Even that source writes that he graduated HS before going to IMG: This year, one of the more fascinating prospects is Anfernee Simons, a 19-year-old guard who, after graduating from high school and reclassifying into the Class of 2018, opted to spend a postgraduate year at IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida ... I'll remove it from the lead. —Bagumba (talk) 11:25, 26 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Someone update it

We have to follow Wikipedia's rules, so for now we follow WP:SPORTSTRANS until there's official confirmation.
At the moment, all news articles and sites are using "unnamed sources", or qualifiers like "reportedly". It *probably* is true, but we work on verifiability, not probablies.
So for now, we play the waiting game. Nil🥝 (talk) 00:39, 25 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Not done: it's not clear what changes you want to be made. Please mention the specific changes in a "change X to Y" format and provide a reliable source if appropriate. Charliehdb (talk) 13:46, 26 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
