Administrator Elections | Discussion phase
The discussion phase of the July 2025 administrator elections is officially open. As a reminder, the schedule of the election is:
- July 18–22 - Discussion phase (we are here)
- July 23–29 - SecurePoll voting phase
- July 30–c. Aug 3 - Scrutineering phase
We are currently in the discussion phase. The candidate subpages are open to questions and comments from everyone, in the same style as a request for adminship. You may discuss the candidates at Wikipedia:Administrator elections/July 2025/Discussion phase.
On July 23, we will start the voting phase. The candidate subpages will close again to public questions and discussion, and everyone will have a week to use the SecurePoll software to vote, which uses a secret ballot. You can see who voted, but not who they voted for. Please note that the vote totals cannot be made public until after voting has ended and as such, it will not be possible for you to see an individual candidate's totals during the election. You must be extended confirmed to vote.
Once voting concludes, we will begin the scrutineering phase, which will last approximately four days, or perhaps a little longer. Once everything is certified, the results will be posted on the results page (you may want to watchlist this page) and transcluded to the main election page. In order to be granted adminship, a candidate must have received at least 70.0% support, calculated as Support / (Support + Oppose), and must also have received a minimum of 20 support votes. Because this is a vote and not a consensus, there are no bureaucrat discussions ("crat chats").
Any questions or issues can be asked on the election talk page. Thank you for your participation. Happy electing.

Question from AstroHiggs29 (05:51, 18 July 2025)
Hello! I would want to begin with a simpler query: how do you get your citations, and how do you verify them by cross-referencing ? --AstroHiggs29 (talk) 05:51, 18 July 2025 (UTC)
- Hello, AstroHiggs29. I get my citations by looking for them in the right places. These days, I call that skill "Google-foo" - the ability to write search terms that produce the results that I want, and then the ability to evaluate the reliability of the flood of sources that search engines deliver. The ability to separate the wheat from the chaff. I have been researching topics that interest me long before Wikipedia and also long before the internet became a big thing. I used to spend a lot of time in physical libraries as a child. School libraries and public libraries. I was fortunate enough to live within walking distance of a brand new public library named after Carl Sandberg, and Sandberg himself attended the dedication. I was nine years old. A childhood friend commented on Facebook the other day that he thought I had read every book in our elementary school library, and I replied, "No, only the good books." And of course bookstores have been favorite places to visit for well over 50 years. I had a part time job in a university bookstore when I was a senior in high school. So, the same principles apply today in the age of the internet as applied back then: Who is the author and what is their background and reputation? Who is the publisher and how credible are they? How much attention does the work devote to the topic? A passing mention or significant coverage? What have critics reviewing the book or other work said about it? Is it considered mainstream or controversial and fringe? The same things can be asked about articles in periodicals and on websites. As for "cross referencing", I assume that I you are referring to wikilinks. There is a fine balance between overlinking and underlinking. Avoid linking terms that literate English speakers almost certainly are familiar with. Put yourself in the shoes of the reader: Is it likely that a reader will be curious about a certain topic mentioned in passing, and will it be useful to that reader to provide a wikilink? If so, do so. I hope that my observations are useful to you. Cullen328 (talk) 07:27, 18 July 2025 (UTC)
Question from Tachytaenius (12:44, 18 July 2025)
Hi :) It seems you were assigned to me when I joined! I joined in order to post a question on the Ellis wormhole article's talk page. Hopefully the person I replied to will answer. But, and here's my question, which is not physics specific: If I wanted to get in contact with the person who made the images on the Ellis wormhole page to verify the information they present, but they don't seem to have a user page, is there anything at all I can do? The user is Turningwoodintomarble. Thank you! --Tachytaenius (talk) 12:44, 18 July 2025 (UTC)
- Never mind! Now that I've registered I found that I was able to. I've sent an email off. Tachytaenius (talk) 12:57, 18 July 2025 (UTC)
- Hello, Tachytaenius. Please be aware that Turningwoodintomarble has not been active in over nine years. Cullen328 (talk) 04:09, 19 July 2025 (UTC)

Question from Rowynmeador on Placer County, California (02:40, 23 July 2025)
hello, I am fixing an incorrect label, but do not know how to remove a subcategory, could you tell me how? --Rowynmeador (talk) 02:40, 23 July 2025 (UTC)
- Hello, Rowynmeador. The codes for categories are located in the last section of an article. In this case, that is the "External links" section. If you use the source editor, it is an easy matter to remove an incorrect category. By the way, I am the author of Iowa Hill Road. I live in adjacent Nevada County, California. Question from MLKeegan (09:45, 24 July 2025)
Hi - I want to add some information that is in Healthcare Accreditation on Wikipedia. You list our health accreditation Not-for-Profit - The Council for Health Service Accreditation of Southern Africa - but we do not use that name anymore. Only COHSASA. Also, want to create a link from that mention to our website. It seems very complicated and a brochure I am trying to upload gets blocked by a filter. The website link I want to add is www.cohsasa.co.za --MLKeegan (talk) 09:45, 24 July 2025 (UTC)
- Hello, MLKeegan. There is no Wikipedia article called Healthcare accreditation so you will need to be precise with the title. Please read about the use of External links on Wikipedia. It is not appropriate to add external links to the body of a Wikipedia article, although adding an external link to the official website of an organization is appropriate in an article about that specific organization. That link can go in the infobox at the beginning or in a special section at the end of the article. As for the name change, WP:COMMONNAME is relevant. We use the most common name for an organization or company, not their "official name". As for uploading a brochure, that is also not appropriate. Such material is almost always copyright protected and almost always written in a promotional tone that is is not right for a neutrally written encyclopedia. Use of copyright protected material is severely restricted on Wikipedia and promotionalism is not permitted. In conclusion, you have a Conflict of interest regarding this organizationand need to make the Paid contributions disclosure. Cullen328 (talk) 16:34, 24 July 2025 (UTC)

Question from De Great Uchematic (04:16, 25 July 2025)
Hello, please if someone wants to write a new article as a whole what is the procedure? --De Great Uchematic (talk) 04:16, 25 July 2025 (UTC)
- Hello, De Great Uchematic. Start by reading Your first article. Your very next step after reading that, in my opinion, should be to assemble a list of links to published reliable sources entirely independent of your chosen topic that devote significant coverage to the topic. If you can put together a robust list, the topic is notable and you are good to go. Otherwise, you would just be wasting your time. Cullen328 (talk) 05:35, 25 July 2025 (UTC)

Today is Bastille Day, commemorated by a DYK as my "story" and a visit to the Bastille Opera in "music". Editing on an iPad vs on a MacBook
Hi Cullen328, hope you are well. I was wondering if you have any experience with editing on a MacBook compared to an iPad. The reason why I ask is because I'm looking into getting one of those devices and was wondering which is better for Wikipedia editing. If you don't feel qualified to answer this question, then you are free to decline to answer my question and refer me to another editor who might give me a better answer. I figured I ask you because you edit a lot on your smartphone and possibly your computer. I currently own an iPhone and a Windows computer, but I find it's more practical to edit using my Windows computer compared to my iPhone. I occasionally edit on my iPhone, but it can sometimes be cumbersome to use especially with using tools like Twinkle. I was wondering if in your experience, if having a physical keyboard has made a difference in your editing, as both devices offer them. Which device do you think I should get to serve me best while editing Wikipedia? I look forward to your response. Please ping me when you respond. Interstellarity (talk) 20:37, 2 August 2025 (UTC)
- Hello, Interstellarity. I am sorry but I am not qualified to help you. I had to make a choice about 45 years ago between Apple and Microsoft, and made the second selection. So, I use Windows desktops, Chrome and Android smartphones. I do not use Twinkle. My generic advice is to try using the the desktop site on smartphones. Good luck! Cullen328 (talk) 03:27, 3 August 2025 (UTC)
- (talk page gnome) @Interstellarity Hopefully the Apple/Microsoft distinction is not relevant here. If you don't need a new laptop, I think a tablet is definitely sufficient for Wikipedia editing. Most of my editing is done on an iPad, viewing the website in desktop mode in a regular web browser, not the mobile app. Twinkle works fine. I find the tablet form factor comfortable (mine's a 11" screen) and I can connect a Bluetooth keyboard if I'm going to do lots of typing. I do visit Wikipedia on my phone but can't bear editing on it and am in awe of highly productive phone editors like Cullen and @Clovermoss. ClaudineChionh (she/her · talk · email · global) 03:38, 3 August 2025 (UTC)
- Thank you all for your responses. No worries, Cullen, if you can't answer my question. @ClaudineChionh I'd be willing to consider both devices especially with considering a MacBook or an iPad with a keyboard. If you think both are sufficient for editing, I can dig deeper into looking into what's best for me. Thanks all for your help. Interstellarity (talk) 22:21, 3 August 2025 (UTC)
re:Sandbox draft
I found one of your sandbox drafts by following a photo link from Commons. You might be interested in this draft for ideas and references. (I've had to stop creating articles, but can't help myself sometimes, so there are a few in my user space.) Yngvadottir (talk) 21:52, 4 August 2025 (UTC)
- Hello, Yngvadottir. Your draft is far superior to mine. Well done. How can we merge them and get this article into the encyclopedia? Cullen328 (talk) 01:21, 5 August 2025 (UTC)
- Thank you! Yours was hardly started, and you might not have gotten your hands on the county history yet, so I thought I'd save you some time. I chose the title Mountain Messenger (Downieville) after finding a redlink somewhere and noting that there are or have been other newspapers by that name: rechecking now, I see Draft:Mountain Messenger was on one in Tennessee, there is or was one in W. Virginia (and Wikidata has 3 items for "Mountain Messenger", the third being in N. Carolina), but redlinks to The Mountain Messenger all appear to be to the Calif. paper (which doesn't seem to be on Wikidata). So I think it would be legit either to simply move my version to mainspace and you then spruce it up as you prefer, under the disambiguated title or moving to "The Mountain Messenger"; or to mainspace your version under the title "The Mountain Messenger" rather than "Mountain Messenger", and then add whatever bits of my version you want to, with attribution. I don't really mind which you do. I didn't stop creating articles in mainspace because I didn't want readers to benefit from them; that was just one of the boundaries of my willingness to keep working on the project despite my revulsion at the WMF's actions and continuing dismissiveness and worse toward the community. I envisaged using my drafts to improve articles later written by others (that's happened in a couple of cases, with IIRC one draft simply made into a redirect to a specialist's article), having them maybe suggest topics to others, and in the worst case, as a posthumous treasure trove. But it saddens me that these topics—and all the ones I haven't written up—aren't available to readers, or for that matter fellow editors. I keep wondering whether I should give up and resume creating articles, and let myself be talked into doing one touchy one; but that didn't end very well, so maybe I shouldn't have bent my principles. All of which is probably far too long of an answer :) Do what seems best to you :) Yngvadottir (talk) 03:16, 5 August 2025 (UTC)

- Hello, LarisaCorda. My first question is, are you Larisa Corda or someone else? Unless you are actually Larisa Corda, which you imply that you are not, you cannot edit with that username. Also, your draft is very poorly referenced. Vast swathes are entirely unreferenced which is a policy violation. References to reliable sources entirely independent of Corda that devote significant coverage to Corda are required. Do you have such sources? An acceptable Wikipedia article accurately summarizes the referenced sources and nothing more than that. Cullen328 (talk) 15:35, 7 August 2025 (UTC)
Administrators' newsletter – August 2025
News and updates for administrators from the past month (July 2025).
- Following a request for comment, a new speedy deletion criterion, G15, has been enacted. It applies to pages generated by a large language model (LLM) without human review.
- Following a request for comment, there is a new policy outlining the granting of permissions to view the IP addresses of temporary accounts. Temporary account deployment on the English Wikipedia is currently scheduled for September 2025, and editors can request access to the permission ahead of time. Admins are encouraged to keep an eye on the request page; there will likely be a flood of editors requesting the permission when they realize they can no longer see IP addresses.
- Administrators can now restrict the "Add a Link" feature to newcomers. The "Add a Link" Structured Task helps new account holders get started with editing. Administrators can configure this setting in the Community Configuration page.
- The arbitration case Indian military history has been closed.
- South Asia (WP:CT/SA) is designated a contentious topic. The topic area is specifically defined as
All pages related to the region of South Asia (India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Nepal), broadly construed, including but not limited to history, politics, ethnicity, and social groups.
- The contentious topic designations for Sri Lanka (SL) and India, Pakistan, and Afghanistan (IPA) are folded into this new contentious topic.
- The community-authorized general sanctions regarding South Asian social groups (GS/CASTE) are rescinded and folded into this new contentious topic.

About a month ago I made my own account and got to terms with the 5 pillars and read over the different policies when it comes to editing and naturally got to editing about stuff I'm interested in, Romanian sports and history. I've come into conflict with a user, OrionNimrod. I always strive to avoid conflict but if you look into his account it's clear he sometimes dives into very disruptive editing patterns, and there's been contention between us twice, I even reported him at ANI. When I did the admins said I was using AI which I haven't used on Wikipedia because AI is a fairly new concept and the boundaries for that from what I've seen on this site are kind of vague. OrionNimrod then responded accusing me of sockpuppetry, even though this is my first account. It's kind of off putting to be directly embroiled in conflict so early on, and I am fairly troubled by this so I was wondering if you could provide a clear voice and read over some of our disputes. Thank you. --Welcometothejungle007 (talk) 11:14, 7 August 2025 (UTC)
- Hello, Welcometothejungle007. Please be aware that OrionNimrod has made over 11,000 edits to Wikipedia and has never been blocked. You, on the other hand, have made 45 edits and have immersed yourself in controversy and confrontation very quickly. This is a collaborative project and I recommend that you try harder to avoid arguing with your fellow editors. Do not take content disputes to WP:ANI and do not file unconvincing reports. The standard of evidence there is very high. Your first step when in a disagreement with another editor is to discuss things directly with that editor, making a friendly and sincere effort to find consensus. - Thank you for the reply. Welcometothejungle007 (talk) 10:02, 8 August 2025 (UTC)
Question from Vladislav1968 Ukraine (07:38, 9 August 2025)
Good morning!
Why cannot I edit an article Messianic Judaism and the Jewish roots of Christianity? I wrote at forums but there are no answers here. --Vladislav1968 Ukraine (talk) 07:38, 9 August 2025 (UTC)
- Hello, Vladislav1968 Ukraine. Messianic Judaism is semi-protected due to vandalism. Since the protection goes all the way back to 2008, you can challenge the protection at WP:RFPP. There is no English Wikipedia article called "Jewish roots of Christianity", probably because that is an obvious aspect of Christianity, not really a separate topic. That term redirects to Jewish Christianity. Cullen328 (talk) 07:56, 9 August 2025 (UTC)

Draft Doubts
Hey @Cullen328, I hope everything’s alright. I came here to seek your guidance on finding article topics. I found a topic on the Alaska Triangle, and during my research, I gathered quite a few sources, maybe even more than enough, so I created a draft here: Draft:Alaska Triangle. However, I later discovered that an article with a similar title had been deleted three times, which makes me unsure how to proceed. I have collected multiple sources that I consider reliable and in-depth, but I wanted to get your advice before moving forward. Jesus isGreat7 ☾⋆ | Ping Me 08:09, 15 August 2025 (UTC)
- Hello, JesusisGreat7. I think that the AFC reviewer made a pretty convincing case that these sources are not reliable by Wikipedia's standards. I also have some concerns about your username, since it could be construed as a promotional username. Please read WP:USERNAME. Cullen328 (talk) 07:30, 16 August 2025 (UTC)

Fair use images of living people
Hey Cullen, I saw your response on the Teahouse saying "Fair-use images of living people are not permitted."
I must admit I didn't know that. Is there a policy about that somewhere buried amid our countless policy documents?
I'm asking because we have plenty of fair use images of movie posters and album covers, many of which include images of living people, so I am wondering where the line is actually drawn. See the two images in our notoriously infamous Virgin Killer article, for example, both of which are fair-use images of people still living. ~Anachronist (talk) 23:30, 20 August 2025 (UTC)
- Hello, Anachronist. The relevant policy is Wikipedia:Non-free content, which lists under "Unacceptable use",
Pictures of people still alive, groups still active, and buildings still standing; provided that taking a new free picture as a replacement (which is almost always considered possible) would serve the same encyclopedic purpose as the non-free image. This includes non-free promotional images.
On the other hand, "Guideline examples" listsCover art: Cover art from various items, for visual identification only in the context of critical commentary of that item (not for identification without critical commentary)
as acceptable usage.
Normally, items of cover art such as film posters or album covers are used only in the article about the movies, albums, plays, books and so on, not to illustrate the biography of the person depicted in the cover art. Cullen328 (talk) 03:20, 21 August 2025 (UTC)

Request: User space copy of deleted page (self-subject, COI noted)
Hi @Cullen328,
I am a new editor and I realize that starting with a page about myself is probably not the ideal way to begin on Wikipedia. Still, I felt it was a natural first step before contributing more widely in areas where I have expertise.
I do understand that articles about living persons require strict notability and neutrality. I thought that I had already provided sufficient reliable sources and written the article in line with policy, but it seems I misunderstood something. I would really value your feedback on why the sources I included might not be sufficient. If the conclusion is that they do not meet the bar, I will accept that — no offence taken.
If you believe there is room for improvement, would it be possible to restore a copy of the deleted page into my user space (sandbox)? That way, I can rework the draft more carefully, improve the tone, and strengthen the sourcing based on your guidance.
Thank you very much for your time and help,
Olivier (Poseidoniot)
P.S. In case it helps, here is a list of independent sources I had already included: InspireHEP – Olivier Carmona (CERN/ALEPH publications) Swissinfo – Robots jockey for position in camel races, April 25, 2005 Spokesman-Review – Robots take reins, April 20, 2005 Wired – Robots of Arabia, November 2005 DLNA – Recognizes Outstanding Member Accomplishments, April 2015 BusinessWire – OCF Announces 2017 Board, December 2016 TV Tech – IBC 2010: What to look for, September 2010 NoJitter – Talking IoT Standards With OCF, September 2019 Connect Professional – Interview OCF, September 2019 Induo Blog – LwM2M Seijmer, February 2024 Aqua Business Days – Olivier Carmona / HydrIoTee, 2024 Poseidoniot (talk) 13:27, 21 August 2025 (UTC)
- Hello, Poseidoniot. Your content still exists at User:Poseidoniot/sandbox. So nothing needs to be restored. Self promotion is strictly forbidden on Wikipedia and starting out by attempting to write an autobiography is a bad idea. I will decline to get involved in assessing your notability. Say, Jim, might you take a look at the work of User:Protalina and if deemed sufficient bestow upon them the Autopatrolled user right? I caught one of their new starts in the New Page queue this morning and it was fucking great. I don't see much point in clogging the New Pages line with their work if it is in any way representative. Really nice. Thanks, —tim //// Carrite (talk) 04:57, 24 August 2025 (UTC)

Today's story - short version: ten years ago we had a DYK about a soprano who sang in concerts with me in the choir, - longer: I found today a youtube of an aria she sang with us then, recorded the same year, - if you still have time: our performances were the weekend before the Iraq war ultimatum, and we sang Dona nobis pacem (and the drummer drummed!) as if they could hear us in Washington. -- Gerda Arendt (talk) 15:28, 18 August 2025 (UTC)
Check out my talk for an Independence day, or: the pic of Oksana Lyniv was taken on 24 August. There's listening and reading in today's story, and I like both. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 18:29, 24 August 2025 (UTC)
On top of my talk: birthday of a great violinist and Requiem for a great friend. We sang Paradisi gloria from the Stabat Mater in the end. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 19:32, 31 August 2025 (UTC)
How to de-escalate
On the page Abcoude me and an IP are engaging in an edit war (which I recognize as wrong) over the death of someone. I put a warning template on their talk page, but they don't seem to want to or try to communicate in any other way besides edit summaries. ☩ (Babysharkboss2) 16:49, 3 September 2025 (UTC)
- Babysharkboss2, cease all edit warring behavior right now because you are at high risk of being blocked if you continue. Do not refer to any person, dead or alive, as a "rando". It inflames things. Do not vent your emotions in edit summaries. Read Dispute resolution for your legitimate options. Cullen328 (talk) 17:00, 3 September 2025 (UTC)
- Babysharkboss2, "this chick" is unacceptably dismissive of a 17 year old who just got killed. What were you thinking? Cullen328 (talk) 17:04, 3 September 2025 (UTC)
- I recognize that wording was in horrid taste. Even if I wasn't in an edit war, even if I was just editing the page myself, if this was my first edit, even, I definitely should've used 'victim'. I realize the severe implications of the wording used and I apologize. ☩ (Babysharkboss2) 17:15, 3 September 2025 (UTC)

How do I grow as an editor?
Greetings, Cullen, I am a new editor on Wikipedia. I only made a few very minor edits (fixing grammar, typos and changing the tone to neutral) and I would really like to improve and begin to take on bigger tasks. What would you recommend? Thank you and best of wishes! CoolestViki (talk) 20:50, 1 September 2025 (UTC)
- Hello, CoolestViki. There are countless ways to make a bigger impact on Wikipedia. One good way is to focus on things that you are highly familiar with, such as the early history of your home town or a hobby of yours or an obscure interest of yours. Perhaps you own some books about a topic that is poorly developed on Wikipedia. Such interests can be an avenue to developing new content.
- I noticed that you changed Mandé peoples to Mandé people. Please read Mandé peoples. The Mandé peoples are not an ethnic group. They are a collection of different ethnic groups that speak the same language. So, the plural "peoples" is appropriate in this case. So, be careful about the changes that you make. Superficial appearances can be deceiving. Cullen328 (talk) 17:27, 3 September 2025 (UTC)
- Wow, I didn't know that the word "peoples" even existed… Well, I guess you learn something new every day. Thank you for the reply! CoolestViki (talk) 18:30, 3 September 2025 (UTC)

Conflict of Interest - Politics
Hey Jim, firstly want to say thank you for being such a prominent contributor of a valuable resource I've made use of my whole life. Secondly, I've taken a look at WP:COI (and WP:PSCOI) and it doesn't seem to mention politics. Is it appropriate to edit articles regarding political ideas and figures I agree with? What about those ideas I would deem opposed to mine? I assume so, so long as I do not start advocating.
I ask because the question of individual politics seems to fall within the realm of bias and is a rather difficult problem. Please let me know if there is an article I've missed somewhere. Thanks for helping out a newcomer. WokeScientologist (talk) 15:04, 6 September 2025 (UTC)
- Being a Democrat or a Republican isn't a COI. Being paid/working for the Democratic Party or for the GOP is. tgeorgescu (talk) 15:07, 6 September 2025 (UTC)
- Hello, WokeScientologist. A problematic conflict of interest arises in the area of politics whenever an editor's political stance or affiliation is more important and motivating to them than our shared goal of creating, expanding and improving a neutral, well-referenced encyclopedia. Personally, I usually refrain from editing articles about topics that I get too emotional about, although I may comment on the talk page. I try to cultivate a willingness to revert vandalism and BLP violations, and insist on neutral content, in articles about people that I may intensely dislike or deeply disagree with. Wikipedia editors can be vigorous advocates off-Wikipedia, but advocacy for anything but free knowledge on Wikipedia itself is problematic. As for reading, the Neutral point of view is the applicable core content policy. Cullen328 (talk) 06:42, 7 September 2025 (UTC)
