girdle

[edit]

"changed girdle to belt; the proper translation is belt, the idea of hercules stealing a queen's undergarment is a mistranslation rooted in misogynistic sexual fantasy" - no; it's only in the last century that "girdle" came to mean a piece of female underwear. Otherwise it means a belt or similar. Johnbod (talk) 01:42, 29 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Introduction to contentious topics

[edit]

You have recently edited a page related to the Arab–Israeli conflict, a topic designated as contentious. This is a brief introduction to contentious topics and does not imply that there are any issues with your editing.

A special set of rules applies to certain topic areas, which are referred to as contentious topics. These are specially designated topics that tend to attract more persistent disruptive editing than the rest of the project and have been designated as contentious topics by the Arbitration Committee. When editing a contentious topic, Wikipedia’s norms and policies are more strictly enforced, and Wikipedia administrators have an expanded level of powers and discretion in order to reduce disruption to the project.

Within contentious topics, editors should edit carefully and constructively, refrain from disrupting the encyclopedia, and:

Additionally, you must be logged in, have 500 edits, and have an account age of 30 days, and you are not allowed to make more than 1 revert within 24 hours on any page within this topic.

Editors are advised to err on the side of caution if unsure whether making a particular edit is consistent with these expectations. If you have any questions about contentious topics procedures, you may ask them at the arbitration clerks' noticeboard or you may learn more about this contentious topic here. You may also choose to note which contentious topics you know about by using the {{Ctopics/aware}} template.

How the alert above relates to Talk:Greta Thunberg

[edit]

Read the top of that page. You can make edit requests following the instructions there, but can't comment on anything including your request. Or of course edit that part of the article. Doug Weller talk 09:14, 10 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Please don’t ignore the above.

[edit]

I can easily block you from the talk page or the article. I do NOT want to do that. But you may force me to, it’s part of my role to see this policy enforced. Doug Weller talk 12:00, 10 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Threatening to ban me when there was no clear warning before the fact is not appropriate moderator conduct. I didn't violate the policy because it wasn't made available to discussion participants and the thread wasn't closed to people with fewer than 500 edits. Morallygrace (talk) 12:23, 10 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
It's one thing to keep discussions civil, it's another to abuse moderation power. I'm won't keep adding to this discussion because it's clear you don't know how to properly enforce the policy and I want to make it easier for you, but acting like I intentionally violated a rule that wasn't listed on the page is just disingenuous. Morallygrace (talk) 12:34, 10 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
The rule was added to the talk page earlier, before I gave you the contentious policy alert. or the other warnings It's not possible to close a thread like that. The problem is that it is only part of the article that is relevant to the policy so even and even iff the entire article was covered by the policy, it would be unusual to set protection on the talk page itself although the article would be protected. Doug Weller talk 12:38, 10 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
But I've thought about what you've said and changed the section heading to make it clear who can and who cannot post, so you have actually helped other editors and for that I thank you. Doug Weller talk 13:02, 10 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry
